Why is the Shipyard still just a dreary, holographic scrolling menu?

At least on XBox I don't think you can preview the paint before buying it.

When update 2.4 hits you can, also on Xbox.

At the OP's idea, great suggestion, I would have liked a bit more fanfare when I bought my Conda, Cutter or Corvette, they're quite the milestones when you're finally able to buy one.

It honestly should be more like Forza when you are sifting through cars in your garage, you are looking at your actual cars not wire frame models.

When I saw the thread title, this was my very first thought. It SHOULD feel special to get a shiny new ship you've been saving for.

Along these lines, it'd be nice if (in certain locations that offer the modules) the ships you could buy came configured with certain upgrades already installed - like cars with options - so that then you don't necessarily have to individually buy and equip those modules after-the-fact.

I'd love to get a better experience out of the shipyards. Even Outfitting could use some better visuals and angles.

A test-drive option has been on my list for a long long time. I don't think jumping needs to be tested but handling is what I'm interested in before buying a new ship. Disable the FSD from low or high waking for all I care. Then toss me in a CQC arena or into the rocks of a ringed world in one of those permit-locked systems to test drive the selected ship - by myself, of course. Point is the asset to put us in should already be available.

+1s, +1s everywhere.

Definitely agree with improvements to the Shipyard. A new ship purchase, whether it be an Eagle or 'conda, should feel a bit more special. Much like buying a real car. That's not to say I wasn't excited moving into my new Python last week...

(speaking of, where's the FDev 'my other car is a Faulcon DeLacy' bumper or window sticker?)

I like the idea of 'test driving' - but by the same token, learning the differences in models from one ship to another is all part of the fun of a new ship for me.

Take a Rep for bringing this up.

To pimp the shipyard to become a commanders experience would be a real enhancement. Not to gameplay
which reduces priority a lot but it's clearly a QoL feature having in the shipyard the advert video, being able to have a
5 Minute test sandbox in space simulation (just like the Training Session) to make you buy exactly this ship.

I would like to see this too, would beven buy the ships I already own again just to try the experience.

Regards,
Miklos

Maybe the ship customization menu could go something like this....

+1

I've been playing Forza recently, and buying a new car is a glorious experience. It's kind of, well, almost 'pornographic' really: being able to zoom right in and slowly examine the delicate curves of metal and glass.

On a related note I really like the minimalistic Forza interface too. Elite's glowy orange interface looks kind of dated by comparison, but that's more just me I think.

Back on topic: yeah, would like the Shipyard to be a bit more satisfying in that respect, but I do also understand about asset-loading etc. If they can do it without it being annoying with long load waits between checking ships out, then awesome, I'll probably spend ages playing with it. If not, I won't rage-quit the game by any stretch.

Hello, Fray. :)

It's not a priority, but yes, the shipyard could definitely do with a bit of love. +1, with the singular proviso that these things should not autoplay under any circumstances. There's thirty-something ships on the list already - can you imagine having to wait for videos loading for each ship, while you're going through the list? It should be a separated and easily-cancelled 'Preview Ship' option, or something of that ilk. :)

Unless you're buying all thirty one (I think?) at the same time, then you'd never see a cutscene for each ship - the point is to play those when you purchase something. Someone above used the term milestones for ships, and that's what they are - the real metric in-game of progress and accomplishment, and a milestone that's currently never given the flair it deserves.

Presumably you'd still keep the ugly, poorly detailed monochrome holos whilst browsing stock so you could assess the basics, i.e. cost, availability, stock stats, etc, before going into a showroom or preview mode for a proper look.

I feel it's only been this way for so long because people have forgotten that the game's no longer just bare bones, and thus needs more of what we'd expect from typical day1 purchases of non-iteratively dev'd games. Perhaps the list o'ships will be one of the quality of life revamps after all of Horizons content is done.

Rep given to OP - what a great idea.

Really though, this is the tip of the iceberg - the game needs a little bit of a re-spray in general. Like some have mentioned, the orange display in all ships is a bit generic and retro. It would be nice to have variety, quirks and the option (even if it cost, like trimming out a new car) to change colours.

Additionally, some 'bolt on' custom bits (with functionality would really add to ships appearance and performance. Many veterans would love to get their hands dirty with these sort of options, I'm sure - also it just adds levels of complexity to kitting out your ship. Great. Roll this up with more uses for the hard points.... get those scanners out there... why should a docking computer use an internal (massive) slot? Grief, are we running a mainframe here or a tidy little computer+app.? Perhaps a nice way to go with all the scanner stuff would be to provide a six slot computer card system, so you can fit one of those that hold up to six cards. An idea?

I could go on.... but yes, the OP idea is nice and well rounded and would offer some level of accomplishment when in the shipyard.

at least you can rotate the preview holo in the shipyard.

compared to the anoying close-up camera settings at the outfitting screen, that often don't allow you to see WHERE those slots are actually on the ship,
just so you can see the silly, unscippable deployment animation everytime you switch out a weapon,
where other games give you a scematic top/botom view of your ship and a drag and drop interface.

how good would look that if the weapons and modules would be switched out by hangar-robot arms when you confirm all your changes? (kinda like Iron man's "hangar")

Please don't give FD any more ideas for their store. I spend too much there as it is. [money]

I kind of like the animation and details you can see in the weapons and utilities. The Outfitting camera, though, does need to be replaced with the new camera system.

OP, that's a good idea. Rep++

I've gotten tired of watching new equipment being installed, but I rarely buy new ships and a decent "preview" would add to the experience.
