It doesn't protect the SRV from impact, at all.Why is that?
I'm gathering you are saying the shield is useless on the SRV?It doesn't protect the SRV from impact, at all.Why is that?
The SRV doesn't protect the SRV from impact? Clearly. Maybe because it's the SRV that's involved in the impact. This isn't impaception.
Yet if you crash your ship into the ground, the shield's protect it...
Hey, it's Obsidian Ant!!! Yeah, nobody said FD was consistent. Maybe it's a different kind of shield technology. After all, SRVs are small and low-energy.
That actually would be the 'real' bug here, though I suppose it can be excused with the whole ships don't need tires to touch ground to move, so they have more powerful shields covering significantly more areas, including physical impacts....but yeah.Yet if you crash your ship into the ground, the shield's protect it...
Shields are a ridiculous mechanic that only exists in games and has no plausible connection to reality.
I reckon they should be taken out of the game entirely.
Replaced with a whole variety of outer hull choices.
Blue light and handwavium?
No thanks.
Except of course, they're one of the things that makes the game playable and fun.
Like speed limits.
And Friendship Drives.
Fine keep them then, see if I care.
Barring the shields on the SRV...Well, I just know it's extremely annoying how ridiculously fast you can deplete an SRV's hull strength when exploring.
They fall apart like some rotten piece of wood even though they have very big shock absorbers and shields.![]()
Barring the shields on the SRV...
I mean, planetary objects still exert some form of gravity. Just look at the Mars Curiosity Rover for example: http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/pia19808-main_tight_crop-monday.jpg or https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe..._Self-Portrait_at_'Big_Sky'_Drilling_Site.jpg
Those wheels are starting to get banged up over time, and that's over a few years of use. In Elite Dangerous, commanders are quite rough with their SRV's as according to what we've seen. It's no wonder the things are always exploding and falling apart.![]()
For that experience, just hop down any reasonably steep canyon on a low-gravity world. Bonus points for doing it at night.@OP: Would you be happier if upon every impact you just rolled on you shield like a ball until the shield depletes?
I would have expected wheels to be more durable 1300 years from now. ^^ Also curiosity's wheels seem to be made of metal, whereas I seem to recall that SRV's wheels are some durable rubber-like polymer.
@OP: Would you be happier if upon every impact you just rolled on you shield like a ball until the shield depletes? I am pretty sure Hamsterball has the exclusive rights to that![]()

And someday we have Tanks, Hamsterballs and Bikes to roam around the surface, right?^^
Oh please... Few seasons from now, when we have access to the earth-like planets, we will be building our own structures on the surface... Say, for example, amusement parks. Riiight?![]()
