Why is the SRV shield so useless?

It doesn't protect the SRV from impact, at all. o_O Why is that?
I'm gathering you are saying the shield is useless on the SRV?

Mostly I'd say because physics, it needs to allow the srv to touch the planet, and drive, and function so it needs certain things to be able to pass through, this including the ground.
And it tuned towards taking out high energy impacts such as bullets and whatnot.

Believe it or not, compared to bullets and guns, an impact is a low energy thing, however if you have ever been in even a minor sudden vehicle accident, you'll know that 'low' is a very relative term.

in short, 50m/s impact vs what 1000 m/s impact of bullets or such.
when its the whole vehicle that stops, yeah, that hurts it. When it is just a little bullet, well yeah, bullet gets destroyed against target, but target takes lotsa damage.

Easiest answer is this: An object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. If the SRV crashes into the ground, the SRV will take damage regardless of whether there is a shield or not. The shield isn't a pillow, it's a membrane that protects you from weapons fire, not cliff-faces. In the case of the SRV smacking face-first into a cliff, the SRV itself is the projectile, not the cliff. As such, it's a little different.

It's like asking why you still get broken ribs when you're shot in the chest while wearing a bulletproof vest. Because, even though the bullet didn't slide right through your chest cavity, the energy of the bullet is still absorbed by the body (and the vest).

Well, I just know it's extremely annoying how ridiculously fast you can deplete an SRV's hull strength when exploring.

They fall apart like some rotten piece of wood even though they have very big shock absorbers and shields. o_O

Hey, it's Obsidian Ant!!! Yeah, nobody said FD was consistent. Maybe it's a different kind of shield technology. After all, SRVs are small and low-energy.

:) It could well be that... :D

Would be nice to have a tank like SRV if that's the case. Though it would probably move very slowly...

Yet if you crash your ship into the ground, the shield's protect it...
That actually would be the 'real' bug here, though I suppose it can be excused with the whole ships don't need tires to touch ground to move, so they have more powerful shields covering significantly more areas, including physical impacts....but yeah.

Shields are a ridiculous mechanic that only exists in games and has no plausible connection to reality.

I reckon they should be taken out of the game entirely.
Replaced with a whole variety of outer hull choices.

Blue light and handwavium?
No thanks.

Except of course, they're one of the things that makes the game playable and fun.
Like speed limits.
And Friendship Drives.

Fine keep them then, see if I care.

Maybe if you limit yourself to the next hundred and fifth years or so it's all magic. FTL is theoretically plausible, just not currently achievable due to too many unknowns. Shield technology is possible, but again, not currently achievable - although, it would likely only work on energy weapons.

Barring the shields on the SRV...

I mean, planetary objects still exert some form of gravity. Just look at the Mars Curiosity Rover for example: http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/pia19808-main_tight_crop-monday.jpg or https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe..._Self-Portrait_at_'Big_Sky'_Drilling_Site.jpg

Those wheels are starting to get banged up over time, and that's over a few years of use. In Elite Dangerous, commanders are quite rough with their SRV's as according to what we've seen. It's no wonder the things are always exploding and falling apart. ;)

I would have expected wheels to be more durable 1300 years from now. ^^ Also curiosity's wheels seem to be made of metal, whereas I seem to recall that SRV's wheels are some durable rubber-like polymer.

@OP: Would you be happier if upon every impact you just rolled on you shield like a ball until the shield depletes? I am pretty sure Hamsterball has the exclusive rights to that :D

Aw man, did you have to link that? Now I just want a Hamsterball SRV. :D

And someday we have Tanks, Hamsterballs and Bikes to roam around the surface, right?^^

Oh please... Few seasons from now, when we have access to the earth-like planets, we will be building our own structures on the surface... Say, for example, amusement parks. Riiight? :D
