Why is using hatch breaking limpets not an offence?

This is the most stupidest decision I've seen.

<Gets interdicted by CMDR
<Submits
<Enemy uses hatch breaking limpets
<I attack them in response, not going down without a fight
<I'm now wanted for attacking an unwanted ship

What an absolute joke. Using hatch breaking limpets (And by extension, Torpedoes don't count as assault unless they connect) should make you wanted as soon as the limpets connect, not as soon as they're successful.

EDIT: This is user error, I have report crimes turned off, because I PvP a bit and forgot to turn it back on.

It's been a while since I used hatch breakers, but I remember getting small bounties for it.

Did you complete a scan of your pirate before attacking?

OP should know that's the way it is in UK streets: if you get assaulted, you have to wait for the blade to fully enter your body before you try to defend yourself, or else the police will arrest you

Yeah it was a player, I ended up getting into my PvP ship and make them run.

I received the 'Warning, hatch breaking limpets in progress' before I shot them, and as usual they had report crimes on so I became wanted.

Is that really the law in the UK? Wow that's dumb.

This is not true.

You are allowed to use 'reasonable force' if you believe yourself to be in imminent danger. It is true that you may be arrested for questioning, whether you are charged is another matter. IANAL.

Then almost certainly you had crimes off and so he didn't get wanted for launching the limpet. He had crimes on so you got wanted for attacking him. Bad form on his part to initiate criminal pvp with crimes on

OP obviously had crimes turned off. If your trading turn them on and you won't have this issue.

So in answer to the question "Why is using hatch breaking limpets not an offence?" it is - duh. [haha]

No, as soon as they are launched. It must be legal for the target to respond before the first one actually connects and hacks the cargo hatch.

Is it conceivable to have enough of an allied rep in a system that a fine for interdiction, then a fine for hatch break don't quite trigger a bounty? I know you get some leeway if you're allied but can you get that much? Cool if you can imho.

1) Have you confirmed that you had "report crimes" switched on?
2) Did you scan the attacking ship first?

BTW only (1) would make what happened reasonable. (2) would still be a bug IMHO as the limpet attached to your craft, which should automatically mark the launcher as wanted.

You get a bounty as soon as your limpet is fired actually.

In the next update interdicting a clean ship will become a crime by itself rather than a minor offense. But since the OP forgot to turn on crime reporting, even that wont help them.

I'd almost certainly have to agree this to be the case. An "attempt" doesn't need to be successful. A "crime" is defined when intent is established.

If you attempt to pick a lock on a building, the intent is still evident. You don't send hatch-breaking limpets to a ship by "accident".

He's a pirate I don't think bad form comes into it old chap. This is piracy not a PVP duel.
The pirate is just working the system to his advantage and appears to understand the rules of the game.
If a trader can't figure out how to turn on Crimes it is not a pirates fault.

Lol i'm not a trader, I decided that for once in my time in this game I would try a Trade CG to see what the appeal was.
