Why is VR 'flat screen' so small?

Just had a try of Odyssey in VR last night.

It's definitely less performant in Odyssey than Horizons, although was kind of nice to see all my Odyssey suits in VR.

It's amazing how much detail the designers put into suits, guns and cockpits, for a game that claims to not support VR any more.

But two things I find really strange:
  1. The 'VR screen' is so damn small ... I expected it to appear like a 10 foot cinema display , so that we'd at least feel 'immersed' even though it was a flat screen. I took a screengrab and calculated the dimensions - it's basically like viewing a 1280x720 screen
  2. A simple toggle into camera suite gives a full-surround VR experience ... so ... what's the big deal? Is it the HUD? or lining things up in VR so we know where we are pointing our guns and tools? I was happily running around a settlement in camera suite and it was awesome.

Something I've often wondered about ppl in VR - were you actually running around, or did you jetpack around like most ppl do outside VR? I could see that causing issues in VR (given that many seem to complain the SRV makes then queasy), all teh mid-air spins etc.

I have not tried this in Elite, but I did jump around quite a lot back when playing SkyrimVR. What I found helped a lot was to prepare your body and imagine how it would feel like if you were actually jumping. On the bonus side this also adds to immersion.

I briefly tried it when the button-combo VR hack worked. Performance was awful, but the best thing about it is jetpacking around looking down. There's nothing so immersive in VR as looking down with a recognisable frame of reference and feeling the height.

I'd love have tried it in a settlement rather than just jumping about on the top of the ship out on a hillside, but the performance was so bad there I didn't even try a settlement.

I don't think jetpack in VR would make me ill to be honest, it seemed similar to me to driving the srv in VR, which doesn't make me ill. It's one off the best VR experiences actually.

I think it's mostly performance. They won't officially support VR until fps is proper, which won't happen before the holiday season at the earliest.
Yeah I guess that makes sense.
I was lucky enough to score a 3080ti last week, so performance is kind of a non issue for me now. (Although I recognise it's still a massive issue for others)

I was just running around as the camera suite doesn't allow for many other commands than basic movement. I didn't think to try jumping tbh.
Personally I love it. The immersion is amazing ... and the fact I was able to have a fully 3D immersive VR experience using the camera suite just had me scratching my head as to why FD didn't make that the default view.
I'm sure the devs have their reasons ...

That sickness you mention is motion sickness, and could also be related to dropped frames. If you get the VR set up correctly and know how to avoid motion sickness you don't feel ill.

I just had another go - this time bothered to use the jetpack. I also managed to take out a few guards - all in camera suite.

From what I can see it works great - so 🤷‍♂️

Just using the third person over-the-shoulder camera - shame there isn't a 'first person perspective' camera.

EDO is so unoptimized it still has issues in higher res for people with a 3090. Certainly very playable, but still with frequent heavy spikes.
