Why it is so important ED keep pc only

Why it is so important ED keep pc only at least at 1st

& as primary platform :(

As one of only a handful of games I was looking forward too this year I was dissapointed that watchdogs was delayed. I heard rumours it was because it was uunplayabe on the final console hardware.

Then today I saw some footage comparing the recent ps4 videos compared with the E3 demo.

There is still hope that PC users will not get the borked version but I doubt it myself as usually that does not happen.

Take a look esp at the comparison of the e3 car scene on the bridge

I guess you mean consoles? Because OSX version is coming.
Consoles are closed platforms so you have to work with a publisher and the console manufacturer. They can decide which games are made, and to a degree how they are made. I don't think there is any kickstarter project original for console.

Also console games have a different game style that most of the elite fans wouldn't like.
There is this brand new article where Braben talks about why not consoles (haven't read it yet).

^this +1

Consoles are opening up to indie publishing. To be honest, I don't see why they shouldn't put a console port out, as long as the PC version isn't hobbled. As indies, they can set their own priorities, so it doesn't have to be handled as badly as it is by big publishers.

I don't know but take this into account.
ED is SP + Co-op + online in persistant univers.
ED wil be sold directly from frontier with there own digital distribution solution.
If I recall? not sure.

Console are extremely controlled as store and online service by that one and only platform firm.

As PC gamer I don't see a problem as win PC is the main dev platform target.
It common that the Main target is all righty then. But the secondary targets ports are to often common a lot less. But doesn't have to be.

As you can do port as cheap as possible or doing almost a remake. the latter is bit rare.
ghost Recon advanced warrior.

By PC I meant personal computer therefore including Mac. Sure I am OK with it coming on consoles but there are so many examples of games getting cut down a cross the board that IF ED was to be a multiplatform release I would be worried.

Thankfully it isn't. Even if it comes on console it will be after the pc... a staggered release like dark star one. Sure I am cool with that. :)

i actually had watch dogs preordered since last year, until i saw what happened to it.

needless to say the delay was to make it playable on nextgen machines (of which i hear from a VERY reliable source, the XBONE couldnt run the code we saw at E3 at all) and downgrade the hell out of it

my preorder is now cancelled, and wont be buying it after either. this is a big sticking point for not only staying PC exclusive, but away from greedy publishers too

I'll. Probably still end up with it at some point, however I shall be either playing it or a demo 1st to make sure it is still like e3 (which i very much doubt) on PC OR I will just get it when it is a 5er in a sale

call my an old cynic, but I pretty much take it as red that any trailer we see at any show is probably post-rendered as much as the capital ship battle trailer was (and Frontier never claimed that was anything else). Haven't Ubisoft been called out on this before? I only worked as a games developer for a short time but I sure as hell remember being amused at the photo-shopped images that went out to the press before the developers had even joined the team :D

I seriously doubt Ubisoft had this fantastic PC version of the game that they stripped down for consoles, more a case of they tarted up footage they had quite a bit.

Once acquired the maturity of the game on PC and Mac, why not a console version? This would certainly bring a lot of buyers for the game

Console is certainly possible.

I've argued this point with some folks already and they claim to be using console style controller and it working fine on PC, which means you could port to console. Of course that is only the flight/combat portion of the game and there is more to come.

For me, Elite Dangerous does not feel like a console game. I want my keyboard, and my HOTAS and other toys at the ready.

Lol its not that I have a dislike of consoles I certainly don't want you to miss out on this game I have owned at least 1 of each console generation since the ps1 but I am just so tired of having a highish end PC nobbled by devs trying to cater to so many different platforms.

Watchdogs is appearing to be the next one in that line. I am thankful that at the very least the console port of ED IF made will be made to fit a around the computer platforms and come later.

Plus I guess I just needed a moan after seeing another promising game, maybe not quite do a colonial marines but still.......

We are rehashing old discussions, but, well...
(self quoting):

First, FD needs to fully develop ED to be a proper PC game (keyboard + mouse, HOTAS joysticks, OR,...). Afterwards they can port ED to whatever system they like, from the next gen consoles to the Samsung smart watch...
preferably by licensing the development.

Can't wait to see a console handling an entire galaxy, massive space stations and full-sized procedural renditions of an entire planet. :D

Still it will make dogfighting easy to avoid, hit boost and fly anything over, ooh, let's say thirty feet away from your enemy, and you'll be outside their LOD draw distance for the graphics. :)

Signed, signed and signed again! Short version: the PC hardware keeps evolving; the consoles' stagnates. Frontier after all, are a business and they'll be able to see that having two entirely separate versions is not financially viable, so the console version will end up holding the PC one back. Just like pretty much every single PC/console game out there.

Chock, love your sig man!

This problem of hobbling the pc version due to console limitations is usually only an issue when multi platform release is the goal - even then if versions are developed individually or at a later date then the pc version usually gets the attention it needs from the developer. The problem comes when publishers demand x y and z, when they focus on console because they think thats where the money is, or when they rush a port to pc for the least money possible.

I can't see it being an issue with Elite; we don't have a big evil publisher pushing their wants and needs into the mix. Even if FD decided right now to get started on a console version I couldn't see it affecting the scope of what they want to achieve on pc.

Just my 2p

why limit it to a console?

To be fair, if I understand you correctly, I don't think ED would be dumbed down to fit with consoles. If anything they will release ED on PS4/XB1 and put them in their own private groups, but playing on the same back end servers as the rest of us.

The servers will simply shuffle data around - it's the game itself that translates that into graphics. If the consoles can't handle a certain aspect of ED then maybe that would be cut out, or reduced in scope, but I don't think the PC version is at risk.
