Why Mr.Braben

First of all, don't get me wrong:

I love this game and I'm not here to whine
But let me tell you a story:

the story of a lone bounty hunter, who was patiently grinding some credits to perfect the outfitting of his Fer-De-Lance.
Then, in the middle of a fierce combat against an anaconda, his ship collided with a security service's eagle at relatively low speed.
For no reason, with full shields and hull, his ship just exploded.

-"What's this ?!", thought the lone hunter "a collision bug ?"

undiscouraged, he bought back his steed.
But then, less than an hour later, the same bug occurred.
Pure mischance ? Bad Karma ?
He could not guess.

Anyway, he realized with terror that he lacked some money to pay the insurance fee a second time.
Even for the basic ship.

Resigned, he left the game, turned off his computer, and returned sadly to work, and reality.

Why Mr.Braben ?
why so much cruelty ?

In Frontier Elite II, I just had to reload my save.
But in Elite Dangerous, I've been...punished

punished for being Daring
punished for risk taking
Punished by a bug !

Forced to resume the beginning, to lose six months of grinding (I have a binding job) and a 51M ship for a sidewinder.

Is it fair ? Did I deserve that ?
I don't know

But I'll never play this game the same way as before

p.s: English is not my native language, sorry for the spelling mistake

Might be worth raising a ticket with support. An actual human being will look into and respond, and if it was indeed a bug, then they will be able to sort something out.

Collisions happen (in combat and out) and it isn't always obvious exactly what happened.

The mistake was not downgrading your ship once you didn't have the insurance to replace it.

If you have a bug to report or claim to submit then do so.

No one on this forum has anyway to tell what happened to you (ie whether it was a bug or user error) unless you recorded it?. Not much point in posting it here IMO.

Does not sound right to me.
An FSD should not blow up that easy.
Report it so FD can test this.

But flying an FSD without insurance is entirely your own 'mistake'.
I can't think of anything that is a bigger fail in a game like this.
I've made my own blunders, but never did I fly an expensive ship without ample insurance money.

My (fully insured FDL) bounces off enemy ships, big rocks and even the station when I'm being really useless. I can't see an eagle causing catastrophic damage to it, its like a flying tank.

Define relatively slow... An eagle traveling at 100m/s is traveling at 360kph Its a 50 metric ton ship, or 100,000kg traveling at 360kph slamming in to what is essentially a solid wall. Of course the eagle exploded.

The issue here is not that the ship exploded or that you lost the FDL because of it. The issue is probability of ship destruction vs time to recovery. When the ships were less expensive and did not have upgradable modules ship loss hurt but not like it does currently. The feel the current balance is far too painful.

Fer-De-Lance has excellent shields. The eagle should not be able to eat through them by collision.
Ticket it.
As a perspective, I have head-butted my FDL into Anacondas to finish them off with less than a ring taken off my shields.

Frankly, collision damage is quite a bit lower than it ought to be. An eagle colliding at a speed differential of 240 m/s has about 4 GJ of kinetic energy, about ten times the approximate shield strength of the FDL. Collisions at speed should generally vaporize both ships based on the energies involved.

How many pips to SYS were you? The difference is huge.

Only for the uninsured, it bothers me not one jot. I like the current insurance system, its fun but harsh like friendly fire.

Let me clarify, I think the current time to recover is a bit harsh for the average player. For those of us looking for a more interesting and intense experience the promised Ironman Mode is hopefully still planned.

I have only had 5 insurance claims since the start of Gamma, I know people who are not Elite ranked in combat who have not lost a single ship yet. Personally I don't like that ships have become the measure of in game accomplishment. It has driven their costs through the roof. The rapid rise in ship cost is out of proportion with their increase in effectiveness, just like the gear grind in MMORPGs.

I feel most people wold find more enjoyment in the game and be more willing to actively participate in PvP and other dangerous in game pursuits if the costs of replacing ships was reduced if not also the cost to acquire them as well.

I remember when, back in Beta I though 7,5000,000cr for an anaconda was expensive, but at that time also had no qualms about risking that ship, but more often then not would fly something else for combat as a cobra or viper was more effective in combat, not because their loss was less painful. It was more about flying the ship best suited to the task, not about what you could afford. That was a more fun version of the game in my opinion.

I have to feel a little for the OP. Recently I purchased an Anaconda and lost it. I had enough credits to replace – but not much left after that. I sold the Conda and purchased a kitted out FdL. I haven't looked back. Moral of the story: in a tight spot consider something cheaper before you lose everything and have to start over from the beginning.
