Why no books in the online store?

I really would like to buy the Elite Dangerous e-books, but it is very difficult in the Netherlands. The largest retailers do not have them on offer.

Why is it not possible to buy them at the official Elite Dangerous web store?
I would love to buy them in the epub format.
Preferably without DRM. I hate books that are contaminated with DRM.
But the Elite Books would be the first ones I would be prepared to buy even if they had DRM contamination.

You should be able to get the Fantastic Books set from their website - http://www.fantasticbookspublishing.com/store/elite-2/

I know this includes the epub format.

You should also be able to get the Gollancz set from here - https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/search.page?SearchText=Elite

I'm not sure whether this includes epub.

With regards to your question on the store stocking the books. We (the authors) have asked for this and there is some agreement about wanting it to happen. I'm not sure what the delay is, currently.

You can also get them from Amazon - like Drews book here. (1st name to mind to search)

Surely it would aid the sale of books if they were advertised on the ED store. Short of people looking for them on the forums I doubt many people who weren't in the KS will know about them ;)

I don't know for sure but could it be that they are not official FD books ?

You can buy them from the likes of Amazon though.

That is of no use to me though. I do not own an Amazon Kindle reader (and I never will, I might add). I have a Kobo Aura HD. I want to buy my books in the epub format.

It would be great if FD could offer the ED books on it's own website in other formats than the kindle format. I would buy all of them.

Well, once Michael has written the sequel to "The Dark Wheel" no doubt they will put it on their site ... however (and this is being asked as a genuine question and not a swipe at the authors) why should FD offer the others in the shop ?

Other than the tie in they were not written nor printed by FD. I appreciate that putting them up for sale will help the authors but what does FD get out of it if they are in competition with Michaels (FD) book ?

You should be able to buy them directly on sites Allen mentioned in plethora of formats (ebooks in epub, mobi and pdf). I've ordered as hardbacks and as audio books, later upgraded hardbacks to signed copies. Call me crazy but I also have them in e-book format :D

how about fulfilling the terms of the writers pack?

from the kickstarter (emphasis mine):

The writer’s pack: The right to write one piece of written fiction set in the Elite: Dangerous world, and (subject to reasonable approval of the content) release it commercially, without paying Frontier further royalties, independently of the game. This category includes all the rewards above. Frontier will cooperate to allow the system name, commander name, planet name, planet description, space station names to be positioned and used in a way to support the fiction within the game. Frontier will also help publicise your title at the time of release of “Elite: Dangerous”, as long as it is finished at that point, alongside the official sequel to “The Dark Wheel”.

Personally I would ask FD (which I think you already have) so maybe it is an oversight .. maybe not (I am not FD) Check the contract too as they have publicised the books - I remember reading about them in the newsletter ;)

(It could just be that The Dark Wheel isn't finished yet which is why the others are not being advertised yet)

I don't believe this is the reason for the delay at the moment.
As you know, Frontier gets a great deal out of publicising the whole franchise. I am sure when David is ready, things will progress.

This evening I succeeded in buying two (DRM infested) Elite Dangerous books via the Kobo store.
The purchasing process went smooth, no complaint there, but the DRM part was just as horrible as I expected. I am used to having full control over the e-books I buy. I very often improve the looks of the books (many publishers are incredibly negligent when ebooks are concerned) and run a spell check when necessary (it very often is). I also want to read my books on any device I want. With DRM crippled books all this is of course out of the question. It feels like having a bully standing next to your book case constantly slapping your hand when you try to use a book. It is suffocating.

I must say that all my objections against DRM crippling have been fully confirmed and reinforced. I know how to repair such crippled books, so that is not the problem, but it is the principle of the whole thing.
I am sorry to say I won't be repeating this experience again, even though I would love to own more Elite Dangerous books.

Nevertheless I am the happy owner now of two Elite Dangerous books:
Elite Wanted by Gavin Deas, and
Elite: Docking is Difficult by Gideon Defoe.

I will start reading immediately.

Quick question regarding DRM. What about e-books published by Fantastic Books Publishing are those DRM-free? (when bought directly in FBP store)

I wish I knew. They are not clear about it.
Kobo is not very informative either.
You only get to know whether the books have DRM (or not) after you buy them.

I will just try buying one and report back here.

EDIT:

I will not buy books at Fantastic Books Publishing as they try to make me pay 5 pounds extra for shipping and handling of e-books ***. That is never going to happen. These guys are crazy.
