Why no Hot-Fix for the falling skimmers?

Asked this myself a week ago. Seriously, at the very least, FD could make a caveman fix and just disable skimmers until 2.4!

It's in the closed beta 2.4 patch notes:

• Fixed the falling skimmer issue that could occur on planet surfaces

Listed in the spoiler section here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/372993-2-4-Open-Beta-Patch-Notes

Apparently you do not understand the concept of hot-fix.

A hot-fix is something a game dev does, if a game flaw routinely results in bad things. Like infinite money exploits, or a glitch that kills players instantly. Like falling skimmers. They hack in a quick solution, like disabling all landable-planetary-base skimmers completely. Which stops killing the players, and eases the reimbursement load on support. And significantly improves the gameplay experience for everyone who wants to land on plants. It's generally not an elegant fix, but it makes the game work.

FD chose to not do this, however. My guesses range from incompetence to apathy, as I can think of no other reason why they would not stop a game glitch that is clearly killing people in an unintended fashion.

Here's an example: back in vanilla WoW, the boats were all kinds of broken a little after launch. They would get people stuck in limbo, requiring GM teleport-intervention to make them playable, or dump people in the water.

In response, Blizzard disabled the boats completely and put in teleport NPCs that filled the function, while they worked on a proper solution. http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_Placeholder

THAT is a hot-fix. FD either cannot do a hot-fix for some reason, or does not judge unintended deaths as being important enough to hot-fix.

No, they chose to fix the bug and a thousand others at the same time. That way servers only come down once rather than a thousand times. It's called professionalism.

A hot-fix or quick-fix engineering update, if you want to be specific, is only applied for critical bugs and is considered an extreme measure in coding. All ships taking off and immediately exploding would need a QFE update. CMDR's who sometimes get hit by skimmers wouldn't apply.

In the meantime, if you die as a result of this bug, you put in a ticket and get refunded. You're out nothing.

People typically guess when they have no knowledge of a subject.

If you play hardcore this is a game breaking bug. No funds can get the insurance count to 0 again.

I think all bugs that can get player killed should be hotfixed

I thought they had. I have been to several bases and haven't seen any skimmers.!

This has been my impression also.
Ain't seen any in about two weeks(?).
Additionally it seems they are much rarer scuttling about around installations too.
Though I have been doing avoidance tactics on approach also - maybe it's working...

Are you sure about that? If you are hit by the skimmer bug, they restore your ship, crew, exploration data (IIRC) etc. I am sure that they can reset the insurance count as well, if you explain your situation and ask nicely. Even in Iron Man, bugs don't count as being killed in my book.

BAck after a month and every installation I visit the skimmers are falling from the sky.

As I play Hardcore, this is not fun if you loose to such a bug?

It is listed as FIXED in the patch notes for 2.4 and is indeed fixed in the currently running Open Beta of 2.4.

Obviously a Hot Fix wasn't an option.

Still not seeing skimmers.
Perhaps I am just lucky I guess...

Guess you are. I've seen plenty of skimmers drop around me on live servers just the day before yesterday. I was lucky enough not to get hit by them, but it's still a problem nonetheless.

Anyway, they drop shortly after loading the instance so if you take care and wait to see what happens before you land / take off you can avoid getting hit, I think.

And that's what I have been doing on my approach.
Still don't recall the last time I saw one scuttling about on the ground though.
Oh well. Luck is as good as skill.
