Why no love for the orca?

Hidy ho all,

I came across another thread, which mentioned the Orca. Now, I'm still learning what ships are what, and how they stack up to other ships. But the wiki article mentioned the orca was the least popular ship in the game.

I took a quick look over the stats, and didn't see any obvious short falls.

So my question is, why is there no love for the Orca?

It used to be the rammers delight, fast and heavy. (still is?) Hopefully it'll get some love when we get the passenger missions update, whenever that is.

Ask the Devs...its them than used the name of an apex kick butt highly intelligent predator and created toothless ship that looks like a salon or for what some have said...a ship for metro-sexuals.

Because it is a very dangerous mammal posing as a friendly goldfish ?
Or maybe because FD didn't think that releasing a passengers ship in a game where there are no passengers could be a problem...

I'd buy one in a heart beat if it had better jump range.
Atm it's bad in every aspect, no fire power, no jump range, no cargo capacity - it's looking pretty neat and has a great view but there is no justification to buy one with a price tag like that...

I just do t fly useless ships.

For the price you can always have something that does the role better than the Orca. Weapons heck the DBE has the same hardpoints.

Full cargo it's max is 192, you may as well buy a T7 for half the price and MORE cargo.

Jump range is a bit on the bad side also, one day this ship may have a use outside a battering ram but not right now

According to one poll, the Keelback is even less popular...

Don't know why, I like the Keelback.

Then again, look at the ship in signature...

I also like Windows Phones... [blah]

Is it really all that toothless? It had 2 medium hardpoints, and 1 large hardpoint. Though the wiki doesn't say where those hardpoints are located.

I'm going to try one soon. I really like the way it looks.

I guess it's a decision I might regret. Although there is some promising concept art showing them roaming about underwater. I know that will be a long time away but it's something to look forward to.

The Keelback is just as lazily designed as the Cobra MKIV ^^ both reek of an intern's job to ante up the ship number while in reality nearly no one seems to fly one ^^

In my opinion the Orca needs a buff of its jump range and free up the internal modules (1 class 6 and 1 class 5 can only be equipped with cargo or HRPs) and we'd have a decent exploration ship between the Asp Explorer and the Anaconda and explorers would get some ship progression just like all the other professions do.

Nobody except me.

I love them. [yesnod]

I have one. It's a fun ship, and if she had a bit better jump range, I would maybe preferred her over the Clipper.

Her time will come with water on planets, and before that, passengers. The reason nobody like to use her a lot is because she has crappy shields as you can't fit the class 6. The C6 slot and one of the C5s can be only used for cargo and HRPs, because it's meant for passenger cabins, when they come. That really hinders the ship's usefulness for anything else but hauling cargo. And both T7 and Clipper are much better even in that and for half the price.

Shame really. And that jump range... *shighs*
Still luv her, though. :)

The short answer is, that the Orca is a ship without a purpose. It was deliberately designed to be good at hauling passengers and bad at everything else, but passenger missions are not yet a thing.

Is it really all that toothless? It had 2 medium hardpoints, and 1 large hardpoint. Though the wiki doesn't say where those hardpoints are located.

The hardpoints and utility points are all clustered together on the belly - I guess they didn't want nasty weapons and chaff and stuff getting in the way of the view from those wraparound windows up in first class. Which means that enemies can stay safe from your guns as long as they stay on top of you.

The main reason the Orca is shunned for combat is that it has all the maneuverability of an asteroid on ice skates. The Orca is the only ship in the game that has a better yaw than pitch; that's simply because both the yaw and pitch are terrible. Those hardpoints pretty much have to have gimballed or turreted weapons in them, because there's no way anyone can actually manually aim an Orca to hit something moving even semi-sentiently with fixed weapons.

The Orca kinda made several "evolutionary steps"...

At first everyone was like wow, I've never killed a CMDR in an Orca!
Then they be like well darn, this thing is fast... can't keep up and I can't kill it!
Even after that, folks put 3x PAs on Orcas (the Battle-Orca) and found it a very fast and interesting support Ship.

Nowadays, folks can run in unshielded and unarmed Orcas into even really bad CGs commonly without ever getting interdicted.
It's plain too fast to be easy prey and the only ships that could mass-lock it can't keep up.

It's a stylish Ship with little/very limited use.
But that has given it a rather unique reputation - together with its Afterburner signal SFX, it's just... stylish :D

A lot of Empire ships get the same criticism.
On the clipper: "Silly and effete looking- a 1970's spaceship with Tron trimmings".

But I do have some faith that FDev will make some cool VIP transport missions when we have passengers and walk aroundies.

I reckon we could even get to transport actual PowerPlay leaders.
Forget "Harry returns to Hogwarts" imagine the player turnout on both sides for "Aisling returns to Cubeo"
There would have to be a series of championships where minimum entry is quadruple Elite CMDRs.
That to decide the crew of the main ship. And then the playoffs in OogieBoogie's wing tournaments for her escort, and then decoy wings, and then the rest of the fleet.

And the "win" for whoever gets to have Aisling on board.

I'll be there.

Weapons Deployed.
