Why not buy the Adder?

I hear a lot of people say your first new ship should be the Viper MKIII, but the Adder is substantially cheaper and has more cargo space.

The biggest 2 differences between the ships is the Viper is slightly faster and has better shields/armor, that's it. The Adder has almost all of the same internals, even the same hard points as the viper, and has more cargo space.

It's the same speed as the starting Sidewinder so no loss there, but is still stronger than the sidewinder and can hold more stuff.

Is there something else I'm missing?

I think the problem is everyone just assumes all people want to do is chase down bounties and play some cowboy bebop role. But there's definite money to be made in mining and transport as well.

So what's the deal here?

The Adder is a very much under appreciated ship. I fell in love with my Adder when i bought it back in 2014. It has remained with me since that time, and still gets taken out of the garage for jolly jaunts.

It is very manoeuvrable has a medium gun to compliment the small guns , has good jump range and can carry a reasonable amount of cargo. It is a far better all round ship than the viper mark3 which while fast isnt that agile. Its range is also pitiful so you cant get around the galaxy easy.

There is a video of an adder pilot taking on a Cutter, getting the shield down, and then the cutter pilot combat logging from the game just as his power l=plant gets destroyed.

PRO TIP: Once you guys start to think about using engineers then the Adder can become a very fast ship. Mine goes over 500Ms with Enhanced thrusters. Combine that with its agility and jump range and you have an excellent smuggler on your hands.

The last part of your statement or question in addition to the one following your post says it all. Some have the need for speed, some have the need for feed. I plan to do a lot of trading, exploring, transporting, so I want the biggest ship with the most cargo area.

Well, the Adder is nicknamed "space toyota" for a reason, it's cheap and super reliable early on. It's a great ship if you want to start exploring or trading and it's hardpoints are nice for a starter ship.

When you're starting out it's way cooler as a choice than the hauler, but long forgotten as you progress...

I bought the Adder last night as my new mission runner. I didn't NEED to get it, but the carry capacity is nice! New missions are now opened up even with just 12 cargo units. Still have one slot for another 4 units.

I'll upgrade it for awhile before going to the cobra. I skipped both on the PC.

One thing I dislike though is the view. It is asymmetrical which bothers me a bit. Also seems more enclosed than the Sidewinder was.

I'm a big fan of the Adder. After upgrading modules and putting some engineer mods on it, she's a great inexpensive ship to travel around in. I have much bigger ships in my stable but I still use my Adder for VIP passenger missions in the bubble. My one complaint is the limited view from the cockpit.

Big fan of the Adder myself. It's actually not bad in combat - very maneuverable and a size 2 hardpoint on top. The only thing I don't like is the visibility - they need to add a glass sunroof and then I'd love it.

I plan to go back to the Adder someday (sold mine to outfit a Cobra) just for the fun of it. I think an A-rated Adder for simpler passenger and SRV missions would be a blast.

So I DID end up buying the Adder in case anyone was curious. Thanks for the recommendations guys.

It's a nice ship. I agree about the cockpit view thing though. Pretty dumb design. But otherwise I got a better ship and was also able to upgrade a few things and get a Canon as my 3rd hard point.

I went for my first bounty run and it went horrible. Pretty sure I accidentally shot a space cop who was also shooting at the guy with the bounty. So they turned on me and killed me in like 10 seconds. I didn't stand a chance. Which sucks.
