Why oh why, do I always need to re-download E: D after every patch????

As yon title says, why?

Due to this recurrent problem, I feel I have now found out why, but I still don't understand.

In order for me to be able to download any patch, and for it to install, I first must remove the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 - 2008 Redistributable (there are several) whatever's from "Programs and Features." Only then does the install finish.

I have submitted a ticket, but the last reply I got was something to the effect of "Thanks for your patience while I've been getting back to you. During this busy period it could take several days to reply, please rest assured we do answer every single ticket."

That was 4 days ago and I submitted said ticket at the 2.4 patch.

It's OK FDev, I don't really wanna play!

Because there are files that have to be installed on your PC to match the server update before the game will run properly. Both the server and the client need to be updated, not just the server.

Hrm.. Black text on black background makes for difficult reading. :/

And how many times am I supposed to download the same files??? I mean to say download the WHOLE game s nothing else works.

Use steam.

You do realize that 99% of your post couldn't be read, right?

Each VC ++ Redistributable is a different version. There is a 32bit and 64bit for each. It looks like they're just updating it but yeah, you're better off trying to contact ED again.

Sounds like something's broken on your system. Maybe antivirus is interfering, maybe it's something else. Hard to diagnose without any details. (This would also be better served when moved to the support forum…)

Welcome to my world where people think it's somehow smart to format their posts in light grey or white, which results in great reading like this:

Not using steam here, and have never had this issue.

What options do you have checked in the launcher? Enable Cache Check? Enable Virtual Cache?

Have you tried checking the drive the game is installed to for errors?

As for the VC++ issue, I'd recommend removing all of them, then reinstalling the newest versions (available from Microsoft) of the complete set from 2005 to 2015 manually, both x86 and x64.

Steam is awesome. No idea why it gets so much hate.

It's far better than the dodgy launcher. Lol
It's download speed is faster during peak times, and it doesn't mess you about with stuff, like what you're experiencing.

And you can see all the games you've brought and never played, just sitting there, looking sad.

Brilliant.

As for the text thing. I'm on mobile, so all your silly themes don't work on me. Mwhahahahahah!

Just don't colour your text yellow. :p

Okay, that's weird — I use the black Elite Dangerous theme, and even I can't see what he wrote without highlighting it.

Because it's a monopoly, an additional layer of DRM, and an otherwise unnecessary 3rd party client.

The launcher isn't the problem here.

Steam is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming. It's central hub where i can manage my game library and saves. It also gives me a single library to browse for great deals and allows me to connect with other players via chat or discussion board. It beats having a hundred accounts with a hundred different dev sites and having to manage and back up all of those saves on your own.

I personally feel Steam was the beginning of the end of PC gaming.

Outside of MMOs, accounts at all are pretty silly, IMO.

As for managing my data myself, I strongly prefer it this way.

They started encrypting the files and obfuscating their names. My guess is that this makes the delta patcher a lot less effective as side effect.

With the latest update, the launcher validated all my files at about 900MB/s then downloaded maybe a hundred megabytes of data at my connection's peak download speed and was done. Whole process took maybe six minutes.

My guess is due to the black text issue the infamous PEBCAK is at work here with your downloading issue.

Interesting... I had to download a lot more on my laptop recently - but I am not sure whether I already had the last version on there previously, so I might be basing my observation on incorrect data.

If you have to uninstall previous VC++ runtime before you can update, then something's wrong with your computer.

Black text on a forum with a default theme of black..... really?

As others have said I have never had this happen on either of our gaming rigs, just a few files download, verify, install and then the button on the launcher goes back to saying play again. I suspect you have an issue with your C++ installs, maybe an issue with your Windows install. I personally would reinstall Windows as it really doesn't take long these days from a USB stick, just back up your Elite journals and settings beforehand.

Not sure what has happened with my initial post, some people are stating they cant read it.

So, basically, every time there is a new patch, I always need to reinstall E: D in its entirety.

I have been able to troubleshoot that the MS Visual C++ (whatever they are) seem to stop the patch from finalising (5 in total, still trying to identify which one exactly) and when I remove those MS whatever's, the game finally installs. But, as stated, this is necessary every time there is a new patch and eventually those whatever's also finish up being downloaded.

Been happening since forever for me.

I have followed every suggestion that FDev state in bugs and issues. I have submitted tickets and as yet, have never had a response other than we are busy we will get back to you soon!

Since 2.4, I tried to install everything in 3 x different hard drives, nada until I noticed the above MS issues. Now downloading it again, but the download appears slow.

I am flummaxed as to why this always happens.

When I do get to play everything runs wonderfully.

There is only an issue with the patch download in its final sequence, < 1 sec remaining.

I have run Windows 10 since it crawled out of the MS womb, and works just fine except this patch nonesense.

No doubt it will eventually install again but if anyone has any credible ideas, I am all elephant ears.

Cheers CMIV
