I'm an alpha backer but have been away for a long time. I revisited Gamma only to find that the Warthog mapping still does not utilize the myriad of buttons and switches at its disposal. Despite the fact that a lot of people will want to do their own mappings, I suspect I am not alone in preferring every single operation to be mapped by default (allowing the user to tweak)?
There are more buttons on the hog than there are controls in ED.
I've got everything mapped on mine, with some switches to spare, and without using the control panel on the throttle.
Save that to C:\users\YOU\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1001\ControlSchemes and you should be good to go.
Summary of my controls:
Joystick
CMS - cycle targeting (L/R for all, U/D for enemies), press for nearest enemy
Pinkie - Toggle FA
Trimswitch - headlook, menu navigation, thrust
TMS - power management, UI tabs
DMS - up for boost, down for toggle headlook, left/right for subsystems targeting
Trigger - primary fire
Weapons release - secondary fire
Nosewheel - target under reticule
Master mode - next firegroup
Throttle
China hat - hardpoints/frameshift
boat switch - silent running
speedbrake - cargo scoop (away from you, hold mode)/landing gear (towards you)
mic - push for heatsink deploy
coolie - UI screen select
slew - yaw (I don't have pedals)
left throttle button - reverse
Since the "default" mappings are only ever going to be a suggestion I guess it doesn't really matter if all controls are mapped or not. Most are going to tweak that in any case.

I have to agree. I didn't even bother to see what ED would do itself with mine, I just jumped straight into T.A.R.G.E.T. and started going from there. I am not completely happy with my config at the moment but it's getting there slowly.
On a side note: I find the A-10 marking all over the throttle distracting so I think I might use some super thin plastic sheet to make an overlay for ED and stick it over the top once I'm happy with my config

Why, oh why, would you want to use a layout designed by someone other than yourself?
Cowboy up and make your own profile. Target, the profile software, is a powerful tool. Use it and map the same, or similar, functions to the same buttons or axis for each similar game. When you get a new game, you wont have to play, "Find the Button". Your muscle memory will just get better and better. You'll be a master of the spaceways.

Use the stick software to map the buttons to keyboard buttons, then map them to ED controls if ED doesn't recognize them. It won't know the difference from a "/" key and a button.
I also wasn't happy with the default Warthog layout. Since I'm planning to play ED for quite a while, I decided to invest the time and effort to learn how to use T.A.R.G.E.T. The basic stuff (w/o getting into advanced scripting) is very simple actually. The software manual is very helpful and explains things properly. I'm a KS backer at founder level but haven't really played much in beta so the biggest challenge was finding out what each function actually does in the game. It's a little time consuming to figure out what you actually need and where to best put it on the stick or throttle. However, even if it is a bit time consuming, I can definitely recommend to anyone to set up your very own controls layout via T.A.R.G.E.T. - It might be a bit tedious to set it all up but you'll be a happy camper for years to come (especially if you make sure to back up the *.fcf file so you won't ever have to do it again ).
