Why should I keep my FSD in good nick?

Neutron star surfing, three, four, five in a row. Covering some nice distance, but the FSD is getting a hammering.
I read that I should keep the FSD above 90% at all times, and this far out I certainly intend to. But out of curiosity, what happens if I don't keep the FSD well maintained and regularly repaired?

You risk dropping out of super cruise at any time due to a FSD failure. Around 85% is where it can start to happen.

If it happens during neutron scooping.. well, have fun.

In my experience (> 2,500 neutron boosts) FSD malfunctions only start at 79%. Those malfunctions just mean you have to wait about 30 seconds before trying again. Don't know what the level is where you can actually get a failure and drop out of SC as I repair when I get down to 80%.

Has anyone ever actually dropped out of SC with a random FSD failure due to low Integrity ?

Never tested it, but I remember leaving i.e. a RES or CZ with a 1% FSD - and never experienced it failing after a SC entry of any type was achieved.

Yes, heading back to the bubble from Barnard's loop, was dumped out of SC a few times. No AFMU on-board.

I think I recall this happening to me years ago, but I haven't seen it tested remotely recently.

Will melt one of my ships later and see what happens.
