Why so many people confused/down about space legs? It was advertised...

Can you name me any main stream space/space ship games that DONT have space legs? Like Eve, or NMS, or SC, or any of the other upcoming games people are looking forward too? Dual Universe, Space, Sarbase, x4, Space Engineers? , in 1991 I was playing Hard Nova with legs, on ground combat, upgrading your armor/weapon, talking to NPC's face to face (sorta)

This was advertised in the kickstarter. I'm hoping they are making ship to ship boarding/combat possible, it was advertised too.

This is the news that was leaked last year, this is what most of the players want, and the biggest news since horizons announcement, and alot of cry baby threads "i dont want space legs"... boo hoo.

I swear you guys act like your $30 or whatever is like walking into a ferrari dealership, everyone should fall down and worship you because you have $30.

here's an analogy to help most of you in every aspect of your life. your work place, your company, your gaming communitiy, this forum, every forum, everything you are a part of (except your family), is a glass of water. You (and every other individual), you are a straw. The glass of water is full of straws. The glass of water doesn't change when your straw is pulled out, or if more are added. The glass of water is just there, fine with you, fine without you, and more or less indifferent. If you think otherwise, it's because you aren't wise yet. So if you played elite back in the 80's and to you, "it's not a game about space legs", wow, sage wisdom drop there. nobody else GAF

I'm excited enough to fill my shoes up with pee pee. In all honesty, 2020 sucks all around, can't wait 2021

Uhm, I don't want space legs. But it was part of the deal from the start, yeah.
I think for most people it was a question of what comes first, atmospherics or space legs, and what should be focus of development.
And if space legs, should it be all out combat stuff or inside our ships and maybe in space for maintenance, which I would have preferred.

It's all off the table now, because Frontier decided for both and we'll see what it will bring to the game.
No need to complain at all.

Super exciting that Elite’s big bold initiative after many years is . . . basic feature parity with other space games.

I think I’d rather see Frontier do something really well that only Elite can do, rather than chasing the tails of other games. Every time they ape another game it comes out bad.

Anyway the teaser trailer was kind of a yawn, and wasn’t something anyone would give a second look at if they aren’t already emotionally invested in Elite Dangerous. Which is fine I guess - this teaser probably wasn't meant to be interesting to anyone other than the fans.

But yeah. For my part I’d rather see more work go into the space part of the game, the planet tech, the ships, the simulation aspects, damage modeling, etc. I’m not the target audience anymore, though, and that’s fine.

I never had a problem with space legs in general. In fact, I can't wait to walk around in my Beluga. It's just FPS (S=Shooter) that I won't miss in Elite.
Combat should reman in our ships. But if it has to be, it better have First Person Perspective as an option. Not just some kindergarten Fortnite clone mode.
X.

EVE got rid of it because, ultimately, it was a waste of dev time.

Not that it was anything more than an alternate interface... it was meant to be more, but yeah...

While many of those games you have mentioned have legs, a lot of them are either very different to Elite or have legs that don't do anything for gameplay. Games like NMS and Space Engineers are basically Minecraft in space, where a good chunk of the game is about wandering around and building stuff on foot, which is difficult to do in a ship. Others, such as X4, don't get any real benefit from space legs beyond it being a boring waste of time between different ships; in particular, you can't use X4 as a reason to have space legs when one of the advertised improvements of the game over X: Rebirth is that you can develop teleportation technology to remove the need to walk anywhere!

Overall, it's difficult to have a game built from the ground up about flying space ships and then add in a good foot-based adventure component as the two share very little in terms of design choices and assets. Not to say that it can't be done, just that it would require the creation of practically a new game that has very little relation to the existing content, and those are development resources that could have instead gone towards improving the core Elite gameplay. It isn't that space legs can't add anything to Elite, it's that there's significant arguments to be made for focusing on Elite Dangerous rather than making a largely unrelated spinoff disguised as a DLC.

I still maintain that they should release space legs as a fully independent stand-alone expansion that is loaded from the same launcher and title screen. Players who want to play their FPS game but don't care about ships won't even have to buy Elite Dangerous (this could be used to get a whole extra potential player base - those who don't care about ships), while those that only want ships just keep ED as it is. Players who own both can seamlessly shift between both gameplay styles as they are both using the same executable file. The other advantage of making an independent title is that it would provide a huge amount of additional marketing for the game, as it would be a new game rather than a DLC for an existing one, which would probably make shareholders even happier too. For us players, making it an independent game would also raise the bar for quality, as it would need solid enough gameplay to be able to justify its own existence rather than simply piggybacking on Elite's existing gameplay under the justification of "it's just a DLC".

To all the people that was yelling at me since day one that Elite is not FPS kiddie Xbox game and I should not expect space legs despite being clearly advertised by the Man himself.

I told you so. Take that!
OK, let's clarify something here, what we are potentially getting with Odyssey is completely new to the Elite series It's never had a walking around element before. So anyone who told you it's not an FPS game, were 100% correct, it's not. HOWEVER .... you are correct to say Elite Dangerous could be an FPS style game. If it's done right, it will work very well.

I'm going to hold my hand up here and admit, I wanted atmospheric landings a lot more than I wanted walking around. I also treated the roadmap leak with a huge amount of scepticism, but everything it said has been proven correct ... with one exception "no mention of atmospheric landings"

Am I mad/upset/angry we're getting walking around? No. I welcome it. But I also hope it's done right .... so, I'm still in the "wait-and-see" camp.
(the trailer was "in-engine footage", not in-game footage ... just remember that).

I wish fdev would do more of this - culling parts of the game that are holding it back and unloved.

Where are all these people who are confused/down about space legs?

Indeed, aside from a few adamant sour grapes, I don't really see that many people down with space legs.

With an update that's bringing both space legs and atmospheric planets (and most likely a lot more), between the two it's the most wanted features by probably 90% or more of all the players, so being unhappy just because other people also got what they wished would be troubling signs of very sad, resentful, frustrated people and I don't think there are that many of those.
