Prompted by a political discussion in an insurance thread (mainly about the meaning of the word welfare) and a recent re-reading of the sadly deceased Ursula K Le Guin's "The Dispossessed", got me thinking about Utopias in fiction.

I'm struggling to think of a Utopia that would follow a broadly right wing agenda - but then maybe I live in a bubble with the rest of my lefty mates!

Admittedly, I have not read "Atlas Shrugged" and I would like recommendations as to whether it's worth it - or anything else along a centrist or right wing agenda that describes a utopian society, or even a clearly defined "end state".

2 lefty ones that spring to mind are Iain M Banks' "Culture" and the aforementioned Anarres in the Dispossessed.

The Culture exists in a post-money and post-scarcity society, and certainly Annarres uses a computers extensively to order and track people, jobs and resources, so perhaps these types of society are dependent on a high level of technology?

Finally, I won't pretend any of us are going to change our political views, but let's look at ideas rather than ad hominems.

So - are the only Utopias those of the Left, and are they dependent on technology freeing us from money and the evils of a consumerist society?
