Why use gimbal frags?

These aren't exactly precision weapons. Point blank is the most effective and you don't need tracking to help aim with that. Even when it would be nice to have tracking for longer ranges, it's not too much of problem to "put dot near (not even inside) of circle and press button until clicking noises stop." They go through the mag quick enough.

I just don't really see the need to sacrifice damage/power for something of not too much benefit that can also be easily countered and actually cause point blank shots to glance.

I was thinking I wanted gimballed frags to have a tighter spread and lower fire rate (like a pump shotgun compared to a full auto spray and pray), but I would just want that fixed as well :p

So again, why would I ever want to use gimballed frags? Or should I just chalk this up to bad design and pray for a weapons overhaul "soon"

Chalk it up to the same reason that PA and Railguns are not available in gimballed versions.
Those at least have the possibility of being useful at range. I can understand the balance decision to give high powered weapons a higher skill floor (though I do still wish for gimbals even if they're slower tracking) but frags are very limited on their range and mag size. You can empty it quicker than most ships can react and forget about module sniping. Again it's best to just jam the gun in there and light it up.

They make it slightly easier to hit subsystems is what I would guess?
It's a cone (that I wish we could see) of RNG pellets. You could line it up dead center but 90% of the bullets are on the outskirts missing the module. By the time you get close enough to where glancing bullets don't matter, neither would gimbal support. It's much more about ship maneuvering and timing at that point.

Potentially useful when hitting smaller ships and/or using wide-spaced mounts?

The one that really makes no sense is the turreted frag cannons.

I prefer my frags gimballed. Makes it more likely that your limited shots will count, and makes it easier to get off quick snap shots, making most use of their quick three shot bursts.

On my Clipper i use large gimballed frags; i already tried fixed and doesn't works well. On the other hand on my FAS i use fixed frags.

Ease of use in conjuncting with other weapons as a secondary weapon auto-compensating for projectile travel time.
They also are handy fending off small agile fighters while gimballing.

I use three of them on my Cutter. Why? Because they're awesome.
As a pre-ram softener and as a warm welcome for anyone who accidentally passes in front of me.
On top of all that, they are practically the only kinetic weapon that doesn't suck against shields.
And also probably the only weapon where it doesn't matter if you go with fixed or gimballed.

I have found that the gimbals are auto and the fixed are semi auto. Also sometimes its much easier to hit a ship that passes close but not directly infront of you. Also good for spaced apart hard points. I find them very effective at destroying modules espesialy when gimbaled.

Frags can be gimballed because at the range they are useful at, your aiming angle changes very quickly.

The idea that fixed is good up close and gimbals are for ranged is backwards, they are best when your maneuvering and you can take advantage of their aiming properties.

Also not every ship has the convergence to run all fixed, if you take a wide one like a clipper and run dual fixed frags at 500m one of the frags will miss, you need a gimballed one if you want accuracy with those hardpoint locations.

The cobra mk3 lower mounts cannot hit many ships with both weapons if you use fixed guns because of how wide apart the mounts are. I found using fixed frags in the lower mounts would often sent the shots either side of a smaller ship even though it was directly in front. Gimbals fixed that for me.

I use a large frag on my Vulture and find its a really useful weapon. It does have a sweet spot though, if you get the range right it seems to do much more damage than if you are too close or too far.
Two of them work well against the Heat relays on a Capitol ship.

I use gimballed frags for 3 reasons:

- BOOMBOOMBOOM, instead of BOOM..BOOM..BOOM.. If you don't know what I am talking about, try both and you will see.

- Since frags have max efficiency at point blank, you may ram your opponent and fire at the last moment. But sometimes you either don't want to ram, or your opponent dodges you at the last moment. Gimballed allow you to still nail the shots.

- It is still easy to untarget your opponent and use them like fixed. Unlike lasers, there would not be any micro-gimballed effect anyway.

Tell this to the many Anaconda commanders who had their powerplant blown up in 2/3 bursts (AKA 10-15 seconds) of my triple frag cannons after I managed to take down their shield...
