Why wasnt the Cobra the default ship ?

Just wondering after all it was in the original Elite ...I know it wasn't in Frontier etc but from the nostalgic point of view

In the original Elite, you couldn't change ships, so the default ship had to be good enough to take the player the full distance. The Cobra Mk III is easily the best all-round ship in the original set, so that was why it was the default (I presume).

Could be that they think the Sidewinder is a better all rounder. The Cobra always looked a little big to be an out and out fighter. Or maybe it's just to tease us;)

I know it says that under the reward of Space Station Name, I can start with a Cobra Mark Three with 1000 Credits to my name.

So, is it right that those whom haven't back this on one of the rewards that doesn't give them the option of starting with a Cobra Mark Three will be starting with a Sidewinder?

:) Explorer: Have the option to start on the edge of explored space with a long range version of the Cobra Mk III and 3,000 CR (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons).

Starting with a Sidewinder - punishment for not backing :D

Even if I can get the cobra, I think I will start with the sidewinder :)

I will start with Sidewinder, just because I want to earn my Cobra. But it was nice from FD to offer some fast forward for pledgers.

I have heard some people mention that there was an idea floated that you would start without a ship and have to earn your ship from scratch.

I asked a similar question in the private backers bit for future dev videos but it hasn't been answered yet. I asked why they choose the sidewinder as the default starting ship. I can imagine starting with a sidewinder will be tough as it will have limited cargo space. There is of course an option to start with a cobra mkIII and 100 credits but the starting ship is to be the sidewinder.

If they are sticking with the original Specs for the Side-Winder, that's going to be pretty harsh.

The Original Space Traders Flight Training Manual said:
SIDEWINDER SCOUT SHIP

Designed by Faulcon deLacy and built in the Onrira Orbital Shipyards by Spalder and Starblaze Inc. to Galactic Navy specifications for a multi- purpose support craft. Mainly used for atmosphere and planetary surface scouting, but extensively too for city-strafing, reconnaissance and infantry air support (and by pirates who favor speed and elusiveness, its primary advantage). Has some interspatial capability not including hyperspace, and must be carried through hyperspace by jump-capable vessels. Hull is too small for the installation of fuel scoops, or more than one missile pod.

Pic (15Kbyte) Dimensions - 35/15/65 ft

Cargo Capacity - None

Armaments - Dual 22-18 lasers; Seeker missiles

Maximum Velocity - 0.37

Inservice Date - 2982 AD (Onrira Orbital/Spalder & Starblaze)

Maneuverability - CF 9

Crew Number - 1

Drive Motors - deLacy Spin Ionic MV

Hull Stress Factor - Not available; C-Holding C50

Hyperspace Capability - No

That's a ship with only a slightly improved turning factor and significant improvement in speed (But that is all) over the Cobra Mark Three.

With room for only one Missile.

One Crew Member.

No Cargo Capacity at all.

No Hyperspace Capability.

So, it can only move from system to system while on board large ship that does have Hyperspace Capability.

So, I suspect anybody starting with this ship will be confined to Bounty Hunting near the same planet they started from until they can afford (Through Bounty Hunting) or steal a better ship.

Thats really harsh, unless they have given the Side-winder better specs this time round.

Agreed. I could have pledged just a little bit more to get a cobra to start. But I want to be able to say I started with the Sidewinder and earned my way up.

If you're anything like me, you'll re-start your game quite a few times to get that "perfect" game. So ... you might start with the Sidewinder at first, but once you've restarted a few times, got the hang of the game, know what you're doing, etc, why not have the option of starting with a Cobra Mk III?
