Why were hand-crafted tiles thought to be a better method for Odyssey, than the randomised 'noise produced' planets of Horizons?

Visual fidelity and ease of creation.

An artist can make these assets, an experienced programmer is required to modify the terrain generation systems used in horizons.

They can also be directed by an art director and tweaked to suit an aesthetic style, or brought to a specific level of "visual quality"

Basically it's easier/cheaper, and looks real nice in marketing shots.

I didn't expect to get what looks like the real answer, without first having to read through the usual sarcasm from the usual suspects, so thanks for that. You're probably right.

Edit: I'd like to add, with all the healthy profit they've been making, you'd think they would wish to save one of the most unique features of their flagship game, even if it were more expensive.

Does anyone know why this decision was taken? I don't think anyone denies that the two systems are different, some people like it, and others like myself don't play any more because of it, but why was the decision made? I don't think i've ever heard anyone explain why the change was necessary or even desirable.
Horizons also use the same system. But for as reason in Odyssey some of the planets are using duplicate art pieces, which makes it very obvious.

I don't think it's worth stopping playing over, when it's only a few planets that seem to be affected.

Horizons looked like turd on toast though IMO.

Odyssey looks pretty decent.

Horizons seemed like some kind of space wizardry was used to generate the planets though, I know a decent bit about computer graphics and I can barely work out how they did it, it could create some amazing overall looks (just a shame it fell apart once you for a bit closer, or.... Just looked at the "detail")

Odyssey, I know where I would start in creating my own version of such a planet gen system, which is a stark contrast to horizons where.... I would mostly be asking friends and doing a lot of research to try and even begin.

Maybe that helps explain the difference between the systems too.

It would be a hell of a lot easier to make changes and upgrade the Odyssey system, horizons stuff.... You're gonna need some serious, and rare expertise.

They need better artists.
The tiles itself aren't the problem for me, it's the logic behind it which seems to be ill-adjusted. That said, I'm 1000 jumps into a trip and so far I've only seen one body with clearly identifiable tiling due to the new Update 6 colours. If there was tiling on other bodies, I didn't notice it.

Perhaps this new system is better to implement future features (water, specific fauna, etc.). In EDO the actual biology that we can found willl be specific to some terrain area. The new planetary tech probably allow them to more efficiently divise planets in "biomes".

Just a guess but the new planetary tech seems more structured / logical (even though it needs some polishing) than what we had in Horizon.

Yep, this is kinda what I was getting at, you can more easily "craft" the planets, and know more about them using the new system, with Horizons it was a lot more "It does it's thing, just stay out of it... we can kinda... poke it a bit"

Whereas Odyssey they can likely get into a lot more granular detail with "asking" it to do stuff they want.
