Why you shouldn't have participated to the alpha/beta stages...

Hi commanders,

Seeing the some less nicer (and I keep polite) posts, rants, whining, etc... I come to a conclusion, which is my point of view of course, you might/will have your own about!

- Playing too much on an unfinished version,
- Playing too much aside bugs,
- Restarting over and over (wipes)
- Wanting always more
- Disappointed not getting more...
- ...Awaiting too much for version v+1
- hey you pledged, so you want returns!!!

...well, beta isn't for you... cause up to here, you didn't played a FINISHED game (well, finished is a big word, you know what's about!).

So, next time you gonna join a (payed-) beta, think twice.

No offense, but why did you joined beta? Because you couldn't wait to test the released version. And I'm sure you would have played as much as you did on alpha/beta, maybe more who knows, and then: ok, what's the next game I'm gonna dig into?!

Nothing personal of course, just a (mine!) thought :)
There were released games I played, and didn't enjoyed. Did I make a giant 'cake' about? No... next one!

yep, burnout was a massive concern for me too.

My plan was to hold off as much as possible to stop this happening.

I had some success in this, but I am itching to crack on now!.

I think you're talking about the number of venomous complaints from people over the course of the beta that it's buggy, in which case I agree. But they embarrass themselves more than anything else. I normally look at complaint threads and just think "lol"

I bought into the stated claims and have found little to no evidence of them being honoured or planned to be honoured. And for that reason I want out.

Yep. I kinda agreed. I played a little of each release, probably a few hours to test bugs. But I held back on jumping in. Which I've now kinda done in full force.

But... one more wipe coming....

I'd settle for what was advertised. I'd happily pay for more down the road.

Elite Website said:
-Elite: Dangerous lets you team up in multiplayer
-It's an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place with breath-taking scope and freedom that creates an epic multiplayer experience with you at the centre of the action. (This is for those it's a single player game sayers)
-Team up with others on missions or travel alone exploring the expanse of space encountering fellow explorers on the way, Elite: Dangerous offers endless choice in one massively multiplayer online experience.
-You can trade for profit between systems, ruthlessly pillage and pilfer at any given opportunity, take part in alliances to bring down planetary economies, tipping the balance of power, or simply explore the open world wonders of the galaxy, together or alone.
-Friends management and matchmaking (friends management is there, matchmaking??)
-Every time you and every other commmander undertake a mission, the outcome has an impact on the galaxy as a whole for everyone, so your experience is ever-unfolding.

I'd just like to point out, that extra M from commander, is literally on the website right now.

I would just like to know what what is being advertised is coming out, that's it, I want to know, okay you say it has an impact, each mission, cool, what kind of things can it impact?

You can't say magic and sell it.

I've participated in many betas over the years, and there always seems to be the types every time.

You get the reasonable, helpful sort who provide both positive and negative feedback in an appropriate manner.

Then you have the fanboys who try to shout down any negative feedback, no matter how valid and reasonably stated.

Of course then there's the opposite, who go absolutely mad with doom and gloom hyperbole.

Feedback is vital, both positive and negative, but the manner in which you provide that feedback is also important. Stating negative facts/opinions in an intelligent way is how problems get found and solved. Shouting down these concerns helps no one.

On the other hand "TYPIGN IN ALL CAPZ WHILE U USE INTERNET SLANG 2 MAKE UR POINT!!!!!!111" ...well that's not really very useful feedback, and no one's ever going to take that person seriously.

The worst folks though, are those that name call and ridicule others for stating issues in a reasonable way. They contribute nothing at all, and that type of comment should not even be allowed. If you disagree with someone that's fine, but telling fellow testers to "get over it" or "just go away this games not for you" is absolutely meaningless and adds nothing to the testing process.

In addition to my above post, I mean for release. I play a lot of betas and I understand development. But what I said above is my expectations for release, as that is what is advertised in order to receive my money.

I backed all the way to alpha level, but I have yet to play the game purely because of the issues OP makes.
Once it is released I doubt I will be able to hold out much longer waiting for the 'full' experience.

Already done. And the minute I see my money returned is when I'll stop posting here.

So you've got no interest in playing the game, you're demanding a refund, yet you still think you have valid contributions to make to the forums?

I've mentioned this a couple of times. From the quality of some posts, burnout is definitely happening. Its not what some people say, its how they say it. A lot of them feel they are playing the game, not testing it. For instance, when wipes occur people tend to get really hot under the collar. Everything is tainted by a perceived lack of features and reoccurring bugs. Well, this is game development. Its slow, it's frustrating and doesn't go to plan. Its not some kind of early access - "haha, I'm playing before you" - like some people behave.

However, we have to remember there are a lot of good players out there, testing and reporting there findings, making the game better and better.

Thanks to them, I think the game is going to be great, especially in the new year when all the kinks get ironed out.

A alpha/beta... even gamma are all subject to alteration.
This even means things being taken out they wanted in.
It is not a promised (so many assume that) it is a proposal and a list of what they want and think will be there... but it was NEVER a promise.
Getting a game this early is a insight to the progress toward that proposal to the point that they CAN make a promise. But prior to that, it will be full of things that are not ready yet and how much can we get out by due date vs what can we do later, and can we actually do all this all the way up to release date.
Some games were written all the way to completion and STILL didn't get released. So even that is not requirement...

... I am itching to crack on now!.

Pretty much my opinion at the moment. I know we're now testing gamma after extensive alpha and beta phases, but I'm itching to make a proper start too. Here's hoping that there won't be a wipe on 16 Dec. Just in case there is a wipe, I'm limiting testing to few hours a week so I don't get too attached to my hauler, while still hoping to find something which breaks the game. ;)

Welcome to alpha and beta testing 101. Where we play the game, break it, report it, and ticket it. Something, I think too many who bought the game without first realizing the baggage involved. Now, onto gamma and the stability has increased dramatically. It's really starting to feel like a game near release now.

Shok.
