Why?

I log on here today, and there's someone whinging about supercruise. There's someone else wanting instructions on how to find mysterious interstellar objects. There's someone else wanting changes to the ships. There's someone else wanting to buy a space station.

Why do you people think it's reasonable to come on here and ask for this stuff? Do you think you're better at game design than DB? Seriously? From your pizza-breadcrumbed duvet, do you think that you have more to offer than the architect of one of the greatest games ever made? Just take a pause from the white noise of your existence and .. actually, that's fine. Take an endless pause. There's no reason to log back in. Come back when you've figured out how much you mean in the grand scheme of things.

Woa - somebody has got themselves into a froth!
This board is called Dangerous Discussion - I have always thought a discussion is where people can ask questions, express their opinions and seek feedback.
You have clearly done that but laced it with a succession of mild insults about those using this board for just that too.
The great thing about this (and other) boards is nobody is forcing you to read any particular thread - if you don't like it, read the next one and chill.

Thanks for your input.

Can you be even more polite and friendly? You do realize this is a discussion forum and people will discuss/ask different things here? sometime even things that you don't like - shocking I know.

How dare this board be so damned democratic.
Allowing people to openly come and air their views, their hopes, their wishes.
Down with this sort of thing!!!

You should see the original title he had when this was first posted. Not a good way to make friends.

Although I must concede that the level of entitlement and demands on these forums has grown exponentially since the good old days of Alpha/Beta testing.

This was a response to mordin.

Can you see that this is a response to what is already on these forums? Maybe the tone is off, in your opinion, but it's a free world, as evidenced by the 'contributions' of the rest of the forum.

I got +rep for that title. Unexpected. You're right, of course, but the use of little-known expletives is occasionally fun just because they get through the filters.

And so you thought that adding another "complaining" thread would improve matters?

The first two threads you mention I've been participating in. If you'd actually care to read the content, there has been some interesting discussion in there. Yes, there are a lot of posts that can be ignored - unfortunately that is the nature of the internet and discussion boards in general, these days.

Stop whinging! :D

Yeah that kinda thing happens, but eh, they're a tiny minority.

There's someone else wanting instructions on how to find mysterious interstellar objects.

What's bad about that?

There's someone else wanting changes to the ships.

Somewhat reasonable request in principle. It's not like ED is set in stone.

There's someone else wanting to buy a space station.

And who wouldn't? I'd love to have my own space station! I don't subscribe to the notion of "this is not ED" because frankly, ED is constantly evolving, and that's a good thing.

I've been wrongly accused of self-advertisement in the screenshots thread before, so I feel I can get away with some actual self advertisement this time: I wrote a plugin for Chrome that lets you filter out topics and posts containing any words or phrases of your choosing. If you don't want to read certain things, this could help ya.

Yes, I have as well, hence the post, which has been building for a while, but today it just popped out - twice, because the first time it got moderated. I still think it, of course. The thing is, there's this gradual but relentless drip of beige suggestions to improve the game, spiced up with the occasional rant about what's wrong with the game. What's wrong with games in general, and particularly MMOs, is that they all get bashed into the same basic shape because the devs listen to the community. This never made a truly great game. What makes a great game is a vision, and the visionary sticking to their vision. Not endless dilution by internet contributors.

Yes, but this is what DB and the FD team are against (i.e. that the game gets bashed into a particular shape). The original Elite in '84 broke the mould. And succeeded because of it. I have no doubt that the devs will only take on suggestions that fit with their philosophy, they have said as much on many occasions. Suggestions and discussions about the game aren't what cause games to be diluted.

Yes, I agree, of course. I do have faith in FD to remain true to the vision. There is a separate issue I have, specifically about the complainers, but I guess that is clear too. This is 1 thread, in which I have gone over the top, versus a hundred threads that don't add anything.

This is on par with saying, "you can't criticize a movie until you have gone out and made your own movie."

It doesn't work that way. People are fully justified to have opinions and view points regardless of their technical skill in creating the the thing under discussion. Obviously someone who knows how to create games might have insight on certain aspects on the back end (e.g., how the P2P effects combat logging) but all of us who play are well within our rights to make comments on the gameplay.

I find this to be a useful discussion board - I have that view that because I have posted here and read a lot of what others say - not because I can code in SQL or PHP or whatever is running this thing.

+1 rep the original poster.

If only people were raising decent discussionpoints that had not already been done to death.
Finding mysterious objects is OK.
Discussions about buying space stations should be insta-shutdown by now, unless its a new argument.

On the (extremely) rare occasions I go to a pub on a Friday night, I find myself surrounded by dozens of people talking absolute crap. My solution is to not go there very often. ;)
