Why can't I remember or even follow the lyrics of "clean" vocals in songs? By that I mean songs that don't have any distortion whatsoever on the vocals. Think your typical song on the radio.

But... But! Why the hell can I happily remember and follow the vocals in death metal? You know, the angry growling stuff? It makes no sense...

If the song is not engaging enough to you, you won't remember it as well. Trying to decypher the growling shows more investment than just listening to a perfectly clear recording already and you can probably draw on previous experiences.
If you growl with a death metal song, your brain has to work even more and the memories are more vivid.

But I am not an expert.

Because you are more in-touch with your angry side; than your fluffy side. You can probably relate to the lines in an Death Metal song, easier then other types of music.

Interesting. I had not thought of that, but I agree with what you are saying.
