WIBNIF ... when you crash, your exploration data gets left in a canister

Having (ahem) just met my demise en-route to Beagle Point, I was thinking it would be lovely if your exploration data was "offloaded" into a canister and left to be recovered in some persistent POI (along with some wreckage).

That would be another nice "incentive" to go scanning planets for POIs.

And there's less of a gut wrench if you do crash ... at least you have the chance to recover days/weeks/months/years of work.

You could always allow the canister to "degrade" in some way ?
And even lock the contents to the original CMDR ?

Anyway, just hoping for some more exploration goodies from FD :D

This has been suggested before (to general approval) - it's certainly something I'd like to see. Especially if it was retroactive, I'd love to go back and pick up the data from the Sonnenkreis' final flight just for the nostalgia value...

Yes, it's been discussed many times. There's usually two sides, those for it, and those that argue that it's balanced this way; exploration is the lowest risk profession out there, so on balance you risk losing much if you do manage to get yourself killed. If Thargoids (or other alien species) start hyperdicting us all across the bubble and opening fire, then we'll definitely want some way to back our data up, such as a black box. Either way, FDev are definitely aware of this suggestion and have so far chosen not to pull the trigger on anything like that. Whether they change their mind as new threats and dangers are introduced to explorers remains to be seen.

I can just see it now

[Direct] "hmmm all that tasty data"

Yes, as other said it has been proposed before.
Personally I would love to see something like this in the game.

Bad luck CMDR.

Like your idea.

Maybe it could be stored somehow, maybe on one of those pieces of iron that gets recovered with you escape pod. Maybe that's just too advanced for 3303 though ;)

One of the things I always liked in EVE was if you died in a bookmarked location, you could go back there with a salvage vessel and salvage things from your own wreck (as long as you got there within a few hours before the POI reset).

That's a really good idea although I think FD would need to limit the number of these "canisters" you could leave behind and they would need to be locked to the CMDR who dropped them. It would be cool if it got implemented.
