Hardware & Technical Wide or 4k monitor

I want to get a new bigger fast response monitor because I want to do some ED PvP. I have an Occulus rift, but I don't like it, so please don't suggest that. My question is whether the wide screen affects what you can see above you compared with the 4k one. Does ED support wide (3440 x 1440) monitors?

Since the the parts on top and bottom are physically missing on an ultrawide you're technically seeing less. :p
Though, in ultrawide's defence, the game adapts the FoV to the height, giving you a wider view of things.
I think it's worth it. Even though we're in a 3D space having a wider view to the sides helps. Our necks prefers moving our heads to the sides more than up and down
The game does support ultrawide, with a few annoying exceptions. Overlays on the maps are out of alignment and it honestly feels like FDev isn't going to fix that, ever. If you can live with that then I think ultrawide is the better option.

UW is better for gaming-focused.

4K is better for all-arounder (work, movies, internet).

That assuming we are comparing monitors of similar physical size.

Yes

I run a 34" Dell Curved for ED with a 24" 1920X1200 browsing monitor both attached to a 980Ti

Works beautifully

I'd love to step up to the Dell 38" sometime next year

Can anyone comment on how response times affect playing PvP? Can you actually gain or lose advantage because of them. Some quote as low as 1ms, while as that Dell above is 8ms. 4k TVs are worse, from what I hear.

Not an issue on my 34" Dell

I would think a few ms here or there pales as a factor in PvP compared to ping times and bandwidth.

Hmmm! I read on other forums that you need a fast response monitor for games than involve combat.

You're talking about Elite here. The game where high end PvP players circle each other in 250 ton bricks, chipping away at their shields for fifteen minutes with even fixed weapons that have a slight auto convergence, until one high wakes out.

These people where probably talking about games like... Counter Strike. The game where you have a tenth of a second to realize you've hurled your mouse round too late, before getting head shotted out of the match. ;) And they're not wrong in that context. The lowest input lag, lowest possible response time monitor will also benefit you in Elite, but it's by no means the deciding factor.

Yeah, the relatively slow paced combat in Elite means that detail probably beats refresh rate. So, a big screen with a lot of dots.
