Newcomer / Intro Will cargo transfer to a free Sidewinder if my ship is destroyed?

Hey, guys.

I made it to Khun and was attempting a run at the engineer's planet from whatever station I was on, but my Cobra kept getting destroyed by one individual who has completely jacked up ships. I had the idea of simply cutting my loses on the Cobra and instead use a free Sidewinder until the person got bored or I became a master of avoiding interdiction (I'm fine with NPC's but they're rubbish), but I made it on the 4th or 5th run anyway.

The problem is that I can't have that happen again while carrying Soontill Relics after making a massive trip, so I'm wondering if the cargo will simply transfer to a free Sidewinder if my ship is destroyed. I know cargo transfers if you swap ships but I don't recall if cargo was transferred when my ship was destroyed a while back.

I also just had another idea while registering my account. Kind've a backup. I was thinking I could switch to solo play before reaching Khun so I only have to worry about NPC's. I'd rather not do that, but if someone is genuinely trying to ruin the game for people I have to use whatever tactics are available to get around them. I also had no cargo or bounties on my head, in case anyone wondered.

Thanks, guys!

And I wasn't slamming solo play. Elite II was solo play! I just meant that as someone who chose open play, it's a bit iffy to switch game modes when you run into difficulties with other human players. Guys like this aren't playing the game though, in my opinion. I wouldn't class them as pirates.

And now that I think about it, I've mostly been doing courier missions. Maybe that's why I had a vague recollection of cargo surviving a destroyed ship. I suppose that kinda thing can be on the pilot's person before they eject.

Yes, I love Open, love the added unknown it brings. Plus i have had some lovely encounters with other players, helping out and being helped out by random strangers. But every now and then you meet a rotten egg. Another one to look out for is players ramming you within station safe zones. It doesn't trigger a Police response, and if they're in some heavy combat vessel it'll kill the rest of us in traders, explorers etc. It happens very infrequently though, so I stick with it. And while I don't use the Solo option, it's entirely legitimate to do so. Engineer planets remind me of being a warthog sprinting for a watering hole with lions all around! We do what we need to do to survive.

Yeah, gankers are a plague of any MMO and frankly, they're no good in general.
And you are right, they are not playing the game. YOU are their game. Don't be somebody else's content!

I went on a huge trip to Maya looking for some meta-alloys but I couldn't find the station I needed, so I checked a Youtube vid again and people were saying 'Maia' in the comments. I nearly cried my eyes out when I saw where it was on the map. I'll do that at the weekend.

So if Elite was the real world, you'd talk to friends, maybe hear some things from contacts in bars or whatever. You'd get an idea where the meta-alloys were. I kinda feel like the creators behind this game got lazy and just assumed our internet community would replace those things.

That's kind've meta and fun. There should be clues in-game though.

I've not encountered that ramming thing :D but yes, I think we have a very similar drive to play in Open. There was a guy spinning around and firing at me while I was parked outside a station early on before I got some practice and just started flying in by myself. He was just having fun though. Totally cool with that.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I had tons of cash so he was really just an annoying flea I had to learn from. I kinda feel bad for people who travel all that way with cargo and get destroyed though.

Fortunately I remember his name so I might deliver some vengeance upon him in the future..

That's particularly funny though. I know exactly what you mean.

You can always try, but don't expect to be really that successful.
The balance in Elite is utterly bonkers. When you are engineering a ship, you usually have a certain use case in mind. Even if that use case is combat, you're never going to match the level of specialization a ganker ship has. Simply because your ship will be set up to be USED for DOING STUFF in game, which means compromises. Their ship is virtually useless for anything but ganking. Plus they usually flock together and will refuse a fair fight anyway.

So you will never "win". You can be annoying as hell, though. :)
That's what I sometimes do. Bring my troll Courier and simply try to get in their way any how I can. Interdicting them right before they're about to interdict somebody else, then running circles around them and fleeing when they start to shoot, wasting their time and buying it for people traveling through the system.
It's fun. For a while, usually. Then I get bored and go do something else.

As a fellow Open player, I’d always recommend trying to find another way round things rather than taking the Solo or PG route. Nothing wrong with them, but personally in that kind of situation I’d rather overcome the challenge rather than just turn the challenge off. Someone attacking you is is providing content for you if you choose to make it that way. Similar to you I’ve sworn revenge on various other players, I’ve made my way round some tricky situations, and one of my favourite game moments was using a bit of cunning and saving a relative newbie from destruction just by talking.

It’s your choice of course but don’t miss out if you’re someone who likes a challenge. Sounds like you persevered in this instance and made it in the end. You’re now a lot more aware of the risks now, so are better equipped to make your way around them, so I’d say stick to your guns and keep doing what you’re doing and make it through in Open.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, pirates aren’t the only villainous type of character, and so someone not acting like a pirate doesn’t discount their actions. There could be all kind of reasons for you getting attacked - not knowing them doesn’t mean it’s someone whose sole intent is to spoil your game (not that the possibility is completely discounted of course).

And final bit to add - Maia isn’t that far once you get going. And it’s in an interesting area of space. Keep your eyes and ears open while you’re out there!

There are (nowadays, anyway) in-game clues to meta-alloys, but finding the start of the trail can be tricky if you don't habitually read everything.

Have a look at the commodity market in a high-tech or military station (they import meta-alloys) for the goods description ... or read through the Codex knowledge base carefully. That should tell you about a non-station source for meta-alloys, which you can then find a location for using other in-game tools.

If you are being continuously destroyed you should report the player.
Or at least ask them to leave you alone.

Oh, I couldn't report anyone, Maggie. I'm for free expression to a fault, some might say. Not that I think your point isn't valid or doesn't work or apply in certain situations. You are the voice of reason in an unreasoning world.

I just think I'd prefer to be annoying like Chris. Feel free to offer unsolicited advice either here or in messages, my friend. Thanks to you both!

Another idea is to check Recent Contacts, click the specific Player and then Block that Player.

This should (very high chance) prevent you ever seeing this one again.
Repeat for other Gankers if that's desired.

PS.
The Sidewinder idea doesn't seem unreasonable.
I did an Engineers Round-Robin yesterday and noone of the present Combatants took any interest in me, not even in Shinrarta Dezhra.
(wouldn't have mattered, since I could have outrun almost anything due to existing Engineering state of that tiny speeder - otherwise wouldn't have been any big loss :D )

Made the same experience when I did the same in my Hauler.

Is it true you have to friend them before you can block them?

AFAIK that's how it was in the past indeed, but (unless I missed a change), it is also possible without Friending anyone up via that Recent Contacts -> Player -> Block.

Just rechecked and indeed it works :

Some random contacts from my History :

So if I wanted to Block that CMDR {Unreadable} for example :

I've actually wanted to go see a nebula so I was intrigued by that aspect of making a run for Maia. And truth be told, I'm too lazy to bother with farming or mining etc. If there's no alloys available when I get there I'll just explore the region until they are.

And I agree with your general view of things. I would never want the danger removed from Elite Dangerous. The first time I hit a neutron star was awesome and even the ganker guy was kind've a fun learning experience. I'm just a newbie but hopefully I'll figure out how to get around certain problems without going into solo play.

Thanks for the advice, by the way.

Yeah, I don't read the newsfeed thingy. Though I've heard people saying I should. I accuse the game developers of being lazy but maybe I'm just too lazy myself. Thanks for the heads up.
