Will crew members insta-travel too?

Wait, they literally said that? The crew is physically dead?

So, we can have ships worth many, many, many millions and not even the most deluxe models in existence come fitted with more than a single escape pod?

These crews truly are suicidal. :S

They did, your NPC crew will rank up, I assume in combat, as they get used. If they die, all the progress is lost, like tears in the rain! [mad]

Crew lounge is a service/area at stations just like contacts/market/etc.

Your inactive crew is on shore leave and will "shadow" you, as in: follow you around the galaxy to be available when you need them.

Yeah, I would have hated that kind of shore leave when I was in the Navy. I would love to see the NPCs ship trailing me everywhere. Would actually be more fun if they had their own ships and could be called in to help when getting attacked. But I guess they are in an unarmed, invisible taxi tagging along, just waiting for the guy on my ship to die. I take that back, they get paid the same even if you don't call them in so I would assume they hope to never get called, especially since they don't get an escape pod!

I'd think the Crew Lounge would be located on whichever ship you happen to be operating, assuming it is not a suisidewinder, eagle, or other single-occupant craft.
Guess we'll see on... when was that release date again?

The crew lounge is located in the same place as your materials, your synthesis machine, and your escape pod. They are nowhere and everywhere at once, unbound by space or time or any of the other rules of the Elite universe.

So yes they are simultaneously in every crew lounge at once and no they don't travel in your ship and hence don't die when your ship explodes. This is because the crew lounge is not being conceived as a place it is a menu option in a gui and so are the NPC crewmates.

The Gamescom footage showed the crew lounge being on the main station services menu, the menu has been changed quite a bit. From what Sandro said you can hire up to 3 pilots, only one can be active and on your ship; the other pilots are on shore leave. I know he said they rank up but I don't recall if that's only for combat but I would assume so. As your NPC pilot ranks up he should get better at combat, I doubt ranking up as an explorer would matter.

Rules? We don't need no stinking rules in the Elite universe! The game seem to get more arcade like with each new release. By 3.0 we can expect not even needing to travel, you set your destination and you get a loading screen until you arrive, popping in just outside the station. Works for Destiny, I have no idea why we bother having ships in that game, they really are just part of the loading screen.
