Hardware & Technical Will ED run on this spec decently?

Sorry for the boring question, but my PC is Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 6600 at 2.4Ghz, 4Gb, nVidia GeForce GTX580. For example I have to run BF3 at pretty low settings.
Thanks for any advice.

CPU looks good, RAM should be OK, but I'm not certain about the video card. It might depend on how much memory the card itself has, and what resolution you plan to run it on.

Thanks Jack. Good point re: Graphics card -1.5Gb memory. Until I install ED and run it, I have no idea what settings I can get away with though. I'm reluctant to buy it only to find it will only run at the lowest settings for example.
Thanks for your help.

I use the same CPU on mine. It's a good CPU. I have an upgraded cooler on mine, you may want to think about that. Not a lot of bucks, I got mine for less than £30.

The GPU card is a bit limited but should be OK if you reduce as much as you can. Since you have experience of this, you won't have too many problems. http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product-geforce-gtx-580-in.html

If you really need to upgrade you can think about it later. But I would suggest you stick with what you have, as much as possible and think about buying one of the newer generation Intels that have just been announced.

I have a spare GTX 660 if you want to buy it.
Only had one careful owner, an old lady who used to play minesweeper on Sundays.
PM me if interested.

Thanks very much to all. I think in time I'll see what Overclockers have on offer, but at least I now know it will run at a reasonable resolution. Even so I'll probably be crap at it like most games....
Interestingly, I tried to update the nVidia drivers through its control panel and got some stupid message about not being able to do it. What I might do is wait for the Mac version, as I've got a top notch MacBook Pro retina i7 with SSD, 16Gb and a 2Gb card. ED should run at top res on that.
Thanks again to all.

It's pretty unlikely that will run Elite better than your current machine.

The 580 was a blazing fast card not so long ago, now it's about midrange ~ 660 Ti/R9 270 level.

Should run fine. E:D is not very demanding, and has become more hardware-friendly with the latest release.

I have a Q9550, 8GB RAM, GTX 670 and I run it on max settings (without Supersampling) with constant 60fps in windowed mode.
Afaik the 670 is not considerably better than your 680, 4GB RAM is enough, and the CPU doesn't have a considerable load, so your smaller Core2Quad shouldn't have any problems either.
