Will Elite: Dangerous survive the loss of Windows 7 Support from Microsoft?

This is not meant as a rhetorical question. I will not be updating on my main PC, but rather running Linux where applicable, or staying on Windows 7 and supporting it myself.

With Steam no longer officially supporting Windows XP last year, even though several of the games they sell are only officially supported on that platform, there is a shadow cast across the PC world, and what it means to own and use a PC on your own accordance, on your own behalf.

Would love to hear from Frontier here, but let me know what you think as a user of these various OSs all the same.

Cheers, and happy new year.

Sorry can't help you, run Win 10 and don't have a problem with it.
No worries, and glad you (presumably) enjoy your setup. I too use Windows 10 on other platforms, I just happen to not care for it over Windows 7 and Linux (Debian and Manjaro) when given the option. That's kind of beside the point though. A third or so of PC uses are still using Windows 7 in spite of it no longer being supported by Microsoft this month. That's the bulk of what I'm getting at here. Will software developers support their users or the winds of obsolescence?

Umm no presuming at all, very happy with Win 10.

As to your concern, yes I understand your anxiety but why should software developers cater for all minorities? Not good business sense to begin with because where do they stop. Is it just Win 7, or Win XP, or hell there could still be someone out there using Win 3 - shouldn't they have their favourite operating system catered for as well? What's next, me demanding FD redo the code so the game will run on my old 486DX-25 machine?

I know you have stated that "..third or so of PC uses are still using Windows 7..", are they home systems or business systems? I know from my own personal experience (Military/Government) that the systems we had to use was always at least 2 versions behind what was currently available. That wasn't because that specific operating system was better, it was because of the exorbitant cost imposed by a lot of software developers to update their product to current operating systems. Hell we were still using DOS based programs in some instances but because the company either no longer exists or wanted an arm/leg/first born just to update their software. They do that because they know they have a niche market and propriety restrictions in place to prevent anyone else redoing their software.

The last time I checked there are still more people using Windows 7 than Windows 10, so I can't comment on that either way.

It's down to whether or not Frontier wants to support walled obsolescence or their users, in my opinion. From a business standpoint, both have their benefits in their own ways, so I'm genuinely curious.

Yes, you keep on saying that, but I asked if this 'majority' of Win 7 licences are business or home usage. If it is the former, then FD have little to be worried about since I can't image too many businesses having ED installed on their servers.

I use Linux on my servers, as do 80+ percent, so I don't think that's all that apt here.

not any more: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-version-market-share/windows/desktop/worldwide

although,I am one of those 4.87% running win 8.1 :D

For what it's worth, last I heard the Linux folks have Elite running pretty well under Wine now. Doesn't sound like VR works yet, although I'm not sure that's properly supported on Win 7 either.

This isn't really meant as a debate thread on the merits of these platforms, but rather wondering at the direction of Frontier and what they will continue to support.

Of course Windows 7 works fine for me running this game. Will it continue to do so?

That's kind of the thing though. Not supporting Windows 7 seems more of an arbitrary distinction at this point, unless you need DX12 for some reason, which is likewise an arbitrary distinction on the part of Microsoft.

Heck, I picked up a Nintendo Switch Lite for the family this Christmas. Maybe the game will get ported to that? :D

...

This isn't meant as a bash to Windows 10 users who, frankly, don't have much choice in the matter left to them anyway, so of course they prefer what they're able to use... Planned CPU obsolescence, for example.

There are still a lot of people using Windows 7 though, myself included, which seems kind of funny considering it is no longer supported this month. It must have something going for it.

I have one custom built PC (primary) with Win7 Ultimate retail, I have one PC with pre installed OEM Win10 Home and one dual boot with Win XP Professional and Win10 Pro retail. I don't care about Microsoft support at all. I can support my own computer myself as long as nobody pushes some unwanted "updates" into it. Even my XP system works just fine at home, I have XP based laptop at work and it also does it's job pretty good. If Steam doesn't want to support some OS I don't care either since I haven't used it for a few years by now. There is no shadow cast as far as I can see. And if ED will ever stop working on Win 7 I'll just replace ED with newer space sim or the Win 7 with newest OS, whichever would seem better option at that time. I don't see any reasons to be concerned about it brother, none at all. Happy New Year 😜

Fair enough. I have bought into this game for the long run though, so naturally I have an interest in where it may be heading.

Cheers, and a happy new year to you too. :)

A great many consumers still use Windows 7 and a great many consumers will continue to do so until the system it's installed on finally dies or becomes so unusable that it's replaced.

The end of support of Windows 7 means very little for Elite: Dangerous. Plenty of people will happily or obliviously run unpatched systems, or they will upgrade, and Elite: Dangerous will continue to run on either.
