Will fleet carriers be able to make money?

And, if so, how might they do this. I'm thinking it'd be pretty silly to spend so much money on something if you can't make a return on your investment, but, what are your thoughts?

No, unfortunately. And even though I dont know it, passive income is something FDev apparently despises, it is grinding you should do.

Hm, I know they said that in the distant past - however a year later they discarded that rule with the implementation of NPC Crews... which enjoy passive income all the time even when not on duty.

Overall, Carriers need to carry some income opportunity. Otherwise, they'd only be a liability and at best an expensive niche gadget.

Maybe but I suspect not.

Wouldn't be too surprised if it can passively cost you money though...

I guess opening up services might allow you to charge a fee for use - maybe commander facing only. So providing services at a useful location might work.

Still tend to think not though :)
Keen for more details as ever, guess we'll be waiting until after the September update drops now.

They object to passive income for players, obviously NPCs don't count.

Honestly, it could be as simple as offering the best prices for whatever you bring to the carrier (as in things that a station pays you for). Just some way to make them worthwhile.

Well, it would be nice if you can for example open a trading post, buy Painite, Void Opals etc. from miners at your Fleet Carrier and after some time travel to some spot where you can sell your 10.000 tons of Painite to some station (cargo transferred in lots of 256t by smaller ship) etc. etc.

But I doubt that FD will implement such things this or next year. Maybe in 2022 or 2025... :)

As it is your ship uses fuel just sitting in space, doing nothing
I have the feeling that carriers will be the same, and if they are persistent then it could get pretty costly
At best I would hope that others allowed to dock have the ability to deliver maint supplies, ore and fuel components and such

Carrier could cost the CMRD about 1,000,000CR per day to run. Basic running cost for pretend crew of the carrier. If you run out of credit the carrier stop functioning until you have credits again. So if you own a carrier and you stop playing for a year, you credit balance would be 365,000,000CR less than it was the day you last played.

Passive credit drain.

As (presumably) the most expensive single player-purchasable asset in the game, what are you going to do with the return on investment anyway?

Just from what we know as their minimum capabilities:
- A deep space carrier could repair and refuel a badly damaged exploration ship, allowing it to get home and sell data.
- A carrier near the bubble could move a mining fleet from a safe system outside the bubble away from pirates to a suitable high-security selling system without them needing to risk (or take time) crossing the intervening space.
- A carrier can transport your entire fleet around the bubble - or even all the way out to Colonia - without you having to pay ship transfer charges or spend several hours with hauler taxis shuttling back and forth.

There'll be ways to make money with them - or at least, boost the earning potential of existing ways - but I wouldn't expect a direct return on investment as such.

Passive income for carriers would be a bit pointless. If you can already afford to run your personal carrier, you probably don't have too much use for credits any more anyway.

Unless we'll get fleet carrier carriers in the future. 😲

If the 2020 expansion will include base building and if those bases can generate passive income, then perhaps that feature gets patched back to fleet carriers as well. Certainly not before that, though.
