PvP Will getting into PvP put me on the radar as a PvPer and make my anonymity go away?

I’m a lone wolf and not the most social of commanders, and the commanders who follow me around and treat comms like a chat room are kind of exhausting. I wouldn’t mind getting some PvP practice in (and I have engaged in PvP a bit, though I’ve never interdicted another commander). But I don’t want to go on anyone’s radar or end up on YouTube videos, and I’m certainly not interested in winging up with anyone and attacking every hollow radar reticule in Deciat. If I value my anonymity, would getting into PvP (for the combat practice) just put me on the radar and make my anonymity go away?

In my experience, only if you start ganking.

If you just do regular PvP you should be OK.

I almost always get interdicted by wings, many of whom will even attack Harmless Sidewinders and explorers (though they don’t put those kills on their YouTube channels). I’m happy to submit to an interdiction and get some combat practice in, but I usually get attacked by wings. It’s hard to get good when I’m surrounded by a wing.

Another thing, kind of a big one: as a lone commander, I don’t want to make a name for myself if I get more into PvP, and get forced into Mobius or Solo just for a little peace and quiet.

It's a huge galaxy.

And you've got a lot of work to do before you can make a dent compared to those that came before you!
;)

What platform are you on?

Meh, I’m really not worried about getting too much fame too fast. I’ve been wing attacked by commanders with their “get outta here, I own the system” comms , and have found them in multiple systems: mostly around engineer bases and CGs, and almost always fly in a wing (they’re on my radar, and I’d prefer to stay off of theirs as best as I can). The “good fight o7” commanders seem like fine fellas though. I’m on PC.

On PC you'll be but a mote!
Don't even worry about it.

The more you get into PvP, the more other PvPers will recognise you. As long as you're a good sport about it, you'll eventually end up on everyone's friends lists (helpful for spontaneous wing fights, instancing, and the like).

I started occasionally ganking some time ago and I haven't seen my CMDR name anywhere yet. It's probably OK. The galaxy is huge enough.

A scrap here and there every once and awhile, and you’ll probably be fine.

Hang around the PvP crowd long enough, though, and you’ll be finding yourself in fights quite often. People will start to remember you, even moreso if you’re good.

I love PvP, it’s about the only reason I still play, but sometimes I just wanna go to the CG and hang out, you know?

I can say that there are ALOT of great people on the PvP side (and several bad eggs tho they stick out pretty bad) If you fight a good fight don't combat log and are even remotely decent people will fight you. I know how it feels to only be in wing fights and being out numbered. But it really can help break the fear of losing a ship and the stress of combat. I am like a poo tier pvper but I still really enjoy PvP and the only reason I had to stop was due to some toxic individuals that took things to far.

You could also contact some of the PvP squadrons.
If you are on xbone you can add me in game anytime.
My commander name is robah1969 my sqauron is called Ok Go.
(OG) offers salt free PvP services to any and all.
You can ask for any ship , outfitting or weapon loadout to suit your need.
I'm on every day usually.

You will end up on YT eventually but even some famous names like Harry Potter will not be known amonst the many non-PvPers.
Having said that, any kind of interaction will decrease your annonymity. But I guess if you simply don't respond to comms you should be fine. Actions speak louder than words anyways.

What are good ships to start out with? I’m aiming to start out with something small like the Vulture or Courier, and later getting something larger, like the Chieftain, Krait, FAS or Clipper. The Chieftain’s a lot of fun and very maneuverable, but it feels pretty drifty.

If you start fighting at CGs to get PVP practice routinely, then yes, your anonymity will go away. The PVP community in this game is incredibly small and once you get them on your friend's list, you'll routinely see the same people you see here at the forums, on Reddit, etc. This can be a fun thing that's pretty unique to this game; you can actually interact with known PVPers like Ryan_m, Potter, etc. That said, you can stay relatively anonymous if you stick to fighting and then disappearing with just a "gg o7" or whatever afterwards.

That said...if you actually join a PVP group and start salt mining, fighting other PVP groups, engage in chest thumping/ trash talking, you will never get away from it. For good reason, I suppose - actions have consequences and those consequences will be ending up on kill-on-sight lists, having your words turned into memes (this can be funny tho), and having insults and doxxing threats end up in your chat window. Though to be fair (and as an indicator of the general toxicity of the Elite player base as a whole), the worst stuff directed at me in chat came from random people not in the PVP community as a response to simply being interdicted and killed.

If you want to PVP and be a lone wolf, by all means seek out fights and enjoy them as transient events. Just don't join the PVP community if you want to stay that way.

Vulture is a good start, it teaches you alot.

It's unlikely, unless you go around spanking people who already have a rep or running your mouth in a salty manner people won't really bat an eyelid.

Besides after you dip you toes in so to speak, you will find it very difficult to be entertained by killing AI, so will most likely end up doing more PvP, seems to be a running trend for anyone who likes challenging gameplay. ED is hard on the nooblets, but not even close on those who have flown a while.

Get a Viper3. Best starter combat ship and still fairly competative (for is size) even against mediums and the occasional badly built big boi.

https://s.orbis.zone/1zye < Thats what I use for Pvp, it's difficult, but my god is it fun, weapons are up to you. (Yes it has no shields but thats largely irrelevant when your speed barely ever drops below 650.)

PvP hub is kinda dead tbh. Most CMDRs are either at the CG, or just don't play anymore. Many are also out on the Distant Ganks II expedition.

If you are trying to build some sort of REP, I suggest starting off by going to San Tu (PvP hub system) and do some fights (if you can find some) and just practice. Don't be quick to jump if someone offers you group membership. Always do research on other pilots and never take anyone at face value. Always assume you will be ganked.

A few tips to follow as a guide and people will respect you for following the unwritten pvp code.

No Crimes On in PvP engagements.
No Premium ammo reloads.
No Healing in a wing of any sort.
Keep the **** talk to a minimum, even if someone is **** talking you.
If someone calls GG, the fight's over. All bets are off till then.
When starting a 1v1 fight, both pilots should "Pass n Go" Then turn around to engage.
Always try and stay within 4.5-5kms max from your opponent.

Flight assist off Is essential for PvP combat, but not crucial. Toggle on/off if you have to when turning etc. It helps a lot.
The FDL is the META PvP ship for combat. Try using that and keep practicing in it. Before long you will be good enough to expand your ship pallete.

Expect to eat MANY rebuys. It is not uncommon for the top pvpers in Elite to have over 1 billion credits in rebuys.

When building your ship. Try and maintain a healthy balance. It's always good to have a nice balance of resistances and health.

If you require more information. Feel free to ask. I've been in the active pvp community since 3301.

You might end fighting another pvper and he might upload the fight on youtube without consent as it happened to me.
