Will I be able to control capital ships? If not, what's the biggest ship I can have?

I'm a capital ship junkie, and I would like to ask if we will be able to eventually own or control etc. bigger ships than just fighters?

If we can't own capital ships, will we be able to control or fly ships larger than fighters with turrets and stuff? Like at least a corvette or frigate sized ship?

Basically I just want to know what the biggest baddest thing I can fly or at least command externally is.

Thanks to anyone who can answer this question. :)

No, no capital ships for players.

The biggest that I'm aware of is the lakon Type 9 trade ship. Which just fits in the station doors.

I will never understand this whole "Control Capital Ships" thing.

In Elite - you are the pilot. You are Commander and fly your own ship. You may, or may not have some help from crew members, be they NPC or real people, later on. There are empty seats on ships as small as the Cobra, and the Anaconda has a whole bridge that may eventually be occupied.

However, those are simply large ships. Capital Ships are crew served, absolutely huge, and controlled by governments. Their Captain does what he is told, and issues orders to his or her crew to action those orders. Not much freedom there :(

I saw that ship in the E3 interview they just did, does that mean that there will be other kinds of "large" ships that are not trade focused but focused on a military role?

I was happy to hear them say that the Lakon would be eventually enabled to allow multiple players control different things like turrets, navigation etc.

And I would be more than happy to "settle" for a "large" ship that has turrets and stuff.

Sorry if I didn't really transmit what I meant, when I said capital ships I don't mean those huge things in the trailers, I just meant large ships that allow for turrets, npc crew etc.

I'm still new to all the features of ED so pardon me if some things you might know I'm still slow on the take ;)

Check out the FAQs and Wiki.

But in short:
A cutter, the smallest type of capital ship, may potentially be piloted by a player if they get enough rep in a faction that do make them available.

This was implied by David Braben's talks and such, but aren't confirmed as a feature yet.

This game is about you, the pilot, not you, the captain of an "executive ship" with hundreds of crews you got to manage and pay.

Ah thanks, I just took a look at the faw and wiki and saw a LOT more info about the game, getting me even more excited, and saw what they're planning as far as giving us "large" ships, and that looks super awesome too :D

Well, considering the sheer amount of cannister debris at stations, i'd say the Lakon-9 is more than enough for most players.

Well out of the very limited choice of ships the Anaconda and Lakon are already in there. Both of those are enormous vessels that fit your definitions.

And if you're new to Elite there other ships from the older games as well like the Panther (confirmed in this game) that are gigantic as well.

This was the last straw, I ran out of excuses to postpone preordering any longer :p Can't wait to fly one of those larger ships into combat...

Be forewarned.

In the current setup, it will be awhile before you can get enough credits for the bigger ships.

Just start with getting your pilot skills in shape instead of trying to trade your way up in credits.

oh no worries, I'm in no rush to just get bigger and better things right away. I have every intention of taking my time and enjoying every ship I start/earn/buy etc. :D

Then welcome to the ride...

David Braben confirmed we will be able to get our hands on cutter class corvettes that are big military grade ships, not as big as the massive capital ships in trailers or visible in the Federation Bond scenarios, but easily big enough.

David also has not ruled out being able to control larger ships in the future, but as as others have stated, it goes against the "you are the pilot" principle.

That being said, Elite itself is evolving with our Avatars being able to walk about in a second confirmed expansion, so that will open up many possible avenues that aren't considered standard 'Elite' gameplay and that may well include being part of or commanding capital ships.

Yep, you can get very big ships with large bridges and internals, multiple crew that you can employ - each with specialist roles. Turrets, point defences, missile batteries and large heavy weapons. And even eventually the ability to carry and launch smaller vessels.

It's gonna be great :)
