Will I be gimping myself if I choose Empire?

We all start in Federation space and that's where all the main action is when it comes to open play. So far most, if not all trade routes have some Federation element to it.

If I choose to go full Empire and get ranks with them will I be locked out of Federation space at higher ranks? Not content locked but as in gameplay, eg I am now kill on sight with any Federation ship.

Even though I serve the Empire I'd like to visit the birthplace of humanity and group up with friends who might choose to be Feds or Allied.

I don't really want to stay with the Federation but will it it means I won't be able to group up later down the track with people who have ranks in other factions.

If you chose the federation you will be locked out of the empire, and if you chose the empire you will be locked out of the federation. Both have their own trade routes.
Also, I suspect that the places with lots of open play action will be on the border between the federation and the empire.

Thanks for this. I wasn't sure if we would be locked out. Hmm this will seriously influence my decision.

Although I like to blaze my own trail I also like to checkup on trade routes, interesting features and all of them are Federation based as all of players start there.

Also if I decide to go pirate finding a potential target will be easier if there are more targets flying around. Seeing that Empire space is a bit removed from the starting systems and requires a bit of effort to get there (so many most new players won't bother or don't know) I might have to stick with Federation.

Be good if we had mutiple Commander slots to play with.

On the other hand, if you chose the empire you can pirate every ship in federation space without getting any bounty in the empire, so it kind of balance things out a little.

But to me the most important thing is making sure that all of your friends are playing the same faction as you. Personally I convinced them all to chose the empire ^^

Already started the Chinese whispers :)

The biggest factor is that all of them will be complete Elite newbies and will rely heavily on websites to make money and get game advice... which is all Fed based at the moment.

Thanks for your answers.

Hmm, I wouldn't assume anything yet, the Empire is unfriendly to me (smuggling) and I can still dock in their stations. I've read people on the forum saying they've got hostile rep with either the Feds or the Empire and can still dock, on the flipside I was talking to someone who couldn't dock in Fed space with an unfriendly status so it looks like it's still gettting balanced. I'm adopting a "wait and see" policy for now.

The Empire is hostile to me after I inadvertently sold their military plans to the federation.

now all empire ships and stations show up as hostiles, but I managed to dock at a station, first being warned I would be destroyed, then being granted docking and scooting inside before the station could fry me. Never entered hangar so quick

leaving the station saw me chased by about 6-8 vipers, Eagles etc before managing to hit SC

You see, that sounds like fun!

So will we get to choose sides upon release? I fear I've already chosen sides due to bounty hunting federation ships before they fixed the rep issue. I really wanted to stay near Earth, but I guess I'll sell my cobra, get a stripped down hauler and make the long journey to Empire space.

How do you choose? Just by doing missions for corps/parties in their solar systems?

I just went to the Empire regardless due to their story kicking off on the 16th. Federation are hostile to me thanks to the early gamma glitch where shooting wanted criminals that belong to a faction knocked on your faction standing. Have to admit, have not seen a single other player in Empire space, and I'm currently stationed around the planets near the Empire capital. Must be too much of a travel for some players. I'm thoroughly enjoing the Empire more then Fed space tbh, they have different details to that of Fed stations, it's a refreshing change in a way. And their ships are just badass looking in my opinion.

However I can still freely travel into Fed space, just stations appear red to me when communicating, same as security services. As long as I don't fire a weapon near any of them they leave me in peace.

The Empire needs you!

You know it's the right thing to do.

Shok.

Is it possible to do business with both sides without either becoming hostile?

I think it's possible - do missions in federation space then as soon as you start losing empire rep, head to empire space and get it back up until you lose too much fed rep. You could keep juggling like that indefinitely...in theory.

But considering that some ships require a rank and higher earning missions require rep I think you'd be gimping yourself trying to remain neutral with either.

I think I may be forced into siding with the Empire soon. Where is the nearest Empire system to the starting locations (I'm currently in LT 15449)?
