Will I be gimping myself if I choose Empire?

The biggest factor is that all of them will be complete Elite newbies and will rely heavily on websites to make money and get game advice... which is all Fed based at the moment.

I don't know... what if:
The Empire needs you!
Let's play Elite Dangerous the empire way! Join our efforts to bring tutorials and guides for new players willing to join our mighty empire.

The first thing that i'll do in Elite is prepare myself to travel to the empire. I don't know what exactly an Elite newbie is, maybe i'm one, but discovering things myself and watching for opportunities is what makes this type of game a lot of fun.

Also, I know that the emperor is dying and will be a struggle for power around there. I think this might call some other players too.

I think it's possible - do missions in federation space then as soon as you start losing empire rep, head to empire space and get it back up until you lose too much fed rep. You could keep juggling like that indefinitely...in theory.

But considering that some ships require a rank and higher earning missions require rep I think you'd be gimping yourself trying to remain neutral with either.

I've been running a bunch of trade missions on the border of empire and fed space lately and they've been increasing my rep with the factions without decreasing my rep with the opposing side. My rep on both indicates that it's rising. Doing it this way might be pretty grindy, but I think it might be possible to get good rep (not just neutrality) with both factions.

You will be hailed as a hero and a legend if you choose to side with the Empire, carried around on the shoulders of your cohorts. Given fame, fortune & slave girls!

...... I hear if you join the Fed's they just spit on you.
