The minimum system specifications call for a 1050 Ti or legacy 960, also it says 4GB of VRAM. So you might be ok with a 970. That's the next card up from the old 900 series of cards.
You could possibly do maybe low or medium settings. From what I remember the 970 had a VRAM issue where you only had 3.5GB of the 4GB of VRAM it claimed to have. It was the GPU I was looking at for my first build back in 2016 but after watching some videos I went with a R9 390 instead cause of that same VRAM issue. Also the R9 390 was cheaper than the 970 then. I paid $295 for it back in 2016. Ah, those pre crypto mining GPU pricing days.
You might be ok with medium settings. Maybe high textures and medium everything else. The settings that will push the GPU the most are usually resolution, lighting, shadows, antialiasing and physics. Textures usually don't cause too much issues. Though with your limited VRAM you might run into issues with the texture setting.
Worst case scenario you will have to set everything to low.
Recommended settings generally get you like all high or very high settings at 1080p and 60 fps or so. Minimum system requirements are less than that. Of course if you want more than what the recommended system requirements can provide you need better hardware.
But this isn't game that requires fast twitchy movements. It's not a first person shooter like Doom Eternal or something. So you don't really need a steady 60 fps or higher to enjoy the game. Getting a steady 60 fps would be nice but it's not going to ruin your experience. So play with the settings and find the performance that works best for you. You can probably turn some of the settings up at the cost of frame rate.
