Will 'No Man's Sky' steal ED's thunder?

I mean its already got procedural planets, wildlife, FPS and space..seems to be doing everything ED wants to do albeit in a funky colorful way. It got a lot more press at E3 too.

#1 it's completely different game, aimed at single player expierence and crafting and gathering; Combat seems to be non-existent;
#2 It's scale is multiple times smaller. It is also fictional universe, with limited set of planets;
#3 Planets themselves and wildlife are nice...I dig style, altough I don't know if it wouldn't get boring very fast; Style is pulp sci-fi, which is cool...;
#3 It's on consoles. ED primary market is PC. Console ports maybe will come, and in that case NMS will actually help ED;
#4 It got more press because Sony premiered it as PlayStation 4 potential exclusive. For all we know it may never arrive to PC;

So will it steal thunder? Probably. Will it matter? Most likely not, because those are different markets and different skill sets you are looking after (NMS is clearly aimed to be way more simple than ED). In a way, I expect NMS to help ED in future to show potential of such games, and peak interest in ED itself.

As Pecisk said, completely different games.

Also NMS is out sometime in 2015, we should expect ED sooner.

Granted it is beautiful for what it is doing but it's PS4 and going to be a port to PC ... eventually. And ... we all know what ports normally tend to turn out like, especially when they are designed for consoles first! :rolleyes:

Personally, I'll be picking up a copy for my PS4 when it comes out, gotta dive into that universe there, it looks great as well. :p

Edit: Ninja'd by Pecisk! :eek: :p

No, that's not true:

Your ship and suit are fragile, and every encounter can test your skills to the limit. From dogfighting in space to firstperson combat on a planet’s surface, you will face foes ready to overwhelm you.

Also wrong:

No Man’s Sky is a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated universe.

You're right about it being a completely different game though.

I'm kind of concerned that No Man's Sky is getting over-hyped, seeing as we've only really seen a couple of trailers and no clear indication of the gameplay. Still looking forward to it though.

Just putting this out there, but getting Elite: Dangerous on the Sony stage as a launch-title for Morpheus and timed 'console-exclusive' would probably get a ton of exposure. The fact is that PC games are usually overlooked in the mainstream media. Even PC gaming sites seem to have quite a large focus on games that have come from the console space...

Because Elite is a niche hardcore game based on a hostile and dark universe. NMS showed us what? Dinosaurs.

Il love NMS, but for the release of this one Elite will be a fully finished product with the planetary expansion fully operational.

Different scope, different marketing strategy

I'd agree with all that and also add another little point, the game seems very "arcadie?", it reminds me a bit of the old "Incoming" or "Battlezone 2" feel, or dare I say ... "X-Beyond the Frontier" with planet landing? Basically, simple but fun. :smilie:

I was looking forward to NMS personally from old videos, but now, well... 5s from takeoff to leaving the atmosphere? Ugh, talk about scale... And PS4 exclusive anyway. I'm a sad bunny, it was really looking good. Too good to be true, sadly. :(

Will 'No Man's Sky' steal ED's thunder?

No. Not as far as I am concerned. But Elite always has been IT for me.

NMS spaceflight model seems very simplistic at the moment. I have no idea how well the game play is thought through, but the planet I saw was not to scale and had an atmosphere that was paper thin.

I liked what I saw in general. I do not mind the cartoony style at all, but I am glad Elite is a bit more realistic. Just looking at a star or a ringed gas giant in ED is awe inspiring. There is nothing comparable in NMS as far as I could see, nor will there be because of the style they chose. It is not a problem, it is just different.

I hope that the principle of the lush flora and fauna generation we saw in NMS will be present in ED too and with ED's way of doing things it will be truly mindbogglingly awesome. I do not think NMS will be able to beat that.

Short answer: No, ED is in it for the long haul, and when ED has both its major expansions released, it will make NMS pale in comparison.

Long answer:

It's a bit disingenuous to say that NMS is a completely different game than Elite Dangerous. A completely different game would be something like this.

But if we do comparisons between ED and NMS, only the core are similar
  • They are both procedurally generated
  • They are both space games

Though these two core factors are incredibly important similarities, the differences are more numerous:

  • Elite Dangerous is based on real sci-fi space, with realistic atmospheres and orbital distances (only the orbital speed is sped up)
  • NMS is a stylized game based on space-fantasy with flying mountains, and tiny atmospheres, absurd "non-orbits" (that's cool though, I like it)

  • Elite Dangerous will be about multiplayer, while living a character's life in the game. Your purpose is whatever you want it to be. Affecting local economies, politics, charting new territory, piracy, assassination / bounty hunting etc.
  • NMS will be a game experience closer to Starbound (though only singleplayer and in 3d), where your only purpose is to gather (mine?) resources on each planet in order to get enough resources to jump to the next system.

  • Elite Dangerous' combat & flight dynamics seem very intricate with a steep learning curve
  • NMS' combat & flight dynamics seem very simplistic

  • Elite Dangerous' sense of scale will be far more epic, both in space and on planets. View distance will most likely be long distance (based on previous games, and the way Cobra engine works)
  • NMS sense of scale is not epic, though its style is beautiful like a Chris Foss painting (someone mentioned). View distance is occluded by dense fog, likely to cover up limitations of the engine.

  • Elite Dangerous is for the PC
  • NMS is for PS4 (hence they got much more awareness than ED)

Also, in all interviews with Hello Games about NMS, when asked about what inspired their game, they've never ever mentioned Elite as being a strong inspiration. I find that a bit disingenuous as I very highly suspect Elite was the major inspiration behind it.

There's not even a development timeline yet and all the pics are artist's renderings. Not even CGI.

So this is vaporware in my eyes til I see something more concrete.

So to answer OP: No, it will not steal ED's "thunder".
