Will Odyssey be worth it?

So I have limited internet and while I can log in and play solo, playing in open is generally not an option for me. (Not to mention I hate gankers with a passion.) So the question is, before I spend a crap load of shekels for Odyssey, will it be worth it? I can't tell if it is designed more for MMORPG style or if it's balanced for playing solo or with just a couple friends. Simple question, but I love the idea of being able to exit the ship and walk around as well as land on planets with atmospheres. I remember my Frontier days, exploring strange new worlds and seeing the life on the surface as I skim the surface.

5 years play for just over $50....another 5 years for another $50? Hell yes!
Would it be five years to the next paid expansion after Odyssey? I was not around as slices of Horizons were being delivered, so don't have a feel for what actually happened then, but FDevs statement that they would move away from a 'Seasons' model make me think that slicing up a big update such as Horizons, or even Odyssey isn't something they wil do, and that what we see early in Odyssey will be the entire basic feature set of this era. Sure, I'd expect them to fine tune and smooth out any gameplay loops that do not work well, and work on a couple of things that didn't quite make it into initial release, but probably not big extra slices of game loops (before the following paid DLC)

In any case, even a player is unable or disinclined to play multiplayer, I can't imagine that Odyssey will not prove worthwhile for anybody who is currently heavily into ED. I will be purcashing, and almost certainly pre-ordering. The VR split implementation is understandable (I program and have some appreciation of these things), without that I'd probably not be purchasing.

I myself are totally non-plussed in general about FPS combat games, (although from what little video I've seen so far, it what FDev have done looks smooth and well implemented. I've never played a FPS game and am not particularly inclined to, altough ED may drag me into the fringe of that, but JUST in ED. As such, outside of whatever kind of bounty hunting they implement, any ground combat in Odyssey for me will be minimal. I just hope that they implement the other roles and associated game mechanics well.

I currently fly two 'main' commanders in ED. I expect to purchase Odyssey for both of them (one Deluxe, one std). My alt accounts will have to wait for fairly deep sales.. As that decision is pretty made, when I purchase is pretty much immaterial. The decision to pre-order will almost certainly be being made by the tempered completionist in me...

I didn't expect much from Odyssey, but it looks excellent. There's no subscription for Elite, and even though I've bought the game on two platforms and paid for ship skins, the 5 years of entertainment has cost very little. So I'd say yes it's very worth it. Spending money on Odyssey feels more like a donation than a purchase.

I can't see why it won't be great for the solo player. I play on my own most of the time and can't see why it won't be a good purchase.

I can't answer your question.... No one can however I gave up on open 6 months after release and only play solo or PG with friends/like minded folk.
I believe FD have said there will be a rich complement of npcs. FD say a lot of things however so I share you concern given npcs can't even drive SRVs or act as proper crew or wingmates.
I paid for this dlc years ago however if I were in your shoes I would go on logic of never preorder and wait and see.

I think it's going to be worth it in the long run, they will probably add extra content over the next year. Although I don't think it's worth getting the alpha, just stick with the pre-order one.

Every part of Elite can be played alone, so I see no reason to think it would be different in this case. You'll probably have FPS missions that you can do alone or with friends, just as you can now.
For me the possibility to walk on foot and explore planets, bases and whatever else is reason enough to consider it an expansion worthy of purchase.

I don't plan to pre-order, because I see no reason to, but I'm waiting impatiently for the release.
I just hate when they repeat "early 2021". What does it mean? January (probably not) February? I need to know!

I like the improvements in the graphics. This alone will be worth purchasing if it will touch on the appearance of locations beyond Odyssey. As for pew-pew part - not for me, I am not a combat person, never was so this aspect will be wasted for me... So far that short presentation was very focused on combat so...

My personal opinion is that it would still be worth it in solo. I'm cool with shooting it out with npcs on foot for missions. I'm assuming that will be a thing, i cant imagine them not having a bgs aspect included.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I +might+ play in open to see other commanders, but otherwise I know that it'll still be worth it in solo.

You're not the boss of me now,
You're not the boss of me now,
You're not the boss of me now,
And you're not that big
life is unfair
