Will Planets be procedural generated?

dont worry they will, as much as stations by the way.

lots of the real stars will be placed at their correct locations, even some of the known exoplanets will be there, a few systems, especialy Sol, will be at least partially hand crafted but the vast majority of the galaxy will of course be procedurally generated, there's no other way to create such a big open world in so little time.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Planets will be procedurally generated, yes. Might be some hand-crafted ones (Earth, etc.) but by and large, they will be generated.

Given the number of planets in the galaxy, they are mostly made by procedural generation. But some will be manually customized by artists, like the earth, perhaps ?

Indeed they will - and not only that, but they'll have some scientific basis depending on where they are and what they are composed of.

There's a little bit of detail about it in Newsletter #10

Although the above video is fairly pretty, it is rather 'bland'.

Found this video today that contains procedurally generated worlds done right (though not graphically as impressive which is understandable for a small team):

No Man's Sky

Remember, not every planet in a star system will support life. so many of them will be barren wastelands of volcanic activity and ice.

Our star system only has one planet that supports life. A lot of star systems probably won't have any.

I would think most planets will be fairly bland but the ones you can walk around on should get lots of love.

There's difference between commercial trailer tailored to cause wow factor and and representation of explaining CS subject used by game development in ten minutes to people who know nothing about it :)

ED planets will be very impressive when landings will come. However, NMS graphics style is kinda ok. Landscapes look interesting, and it gives game a cartoonish look, but I think that's what they aimed for.

I would dispute that. Gas giants - bland? Even barren planets can be lot of fun, especially in space suits and near zero-g gravity, like jumps from 10 km high cliffs.

Just need imagination.

Granted but that wasn't really my point; my point was more that for a game, the 2nd video demonstrates what is possible other than just rendering nice looking scenery.

They're both amazing achievements.

Or Olympus Mons on Mars

I think NMS's visual style is absolutely stunning.
Like a real, moving, breathing Chris Foss painting - with Sand Worms!

Procedural starships too!

Interested to see how cities and outposts etc are handled - if they are at all...

All in all, I think the visual style and the eye-popping flora, fauna, deformable terrain, ruins, monsters and overall atmosphere are simply amazing.

Can't wait to see how FD respond!

As far as what's possible, just remember Frontier was released in 1993 think how far things have come in 20 years in terms both of the techniques and the amount of computing power in the average persons system....

The videos people keep posting up are impressive, no doubt about that - but do they represent the pinnacle of what's possible? I'm inclined to say not, and I can't wait to see what FD serve up when the time is right :)

The competition can only be a good thing for us the consumer...

I am looking forward to FD's showing even more now that i have seen what some of the competition can muster up.

Swimming out of a populated ocean and flying across an inhabited planet up into space as NML demonstrates leaves me feeling very positive about the technology aspect.

I look forward to getting out of my ship and immersing myself in the wonder of it...

Assuming i can stop gawking at the space content first.

Exactly, with FD's budget and Braben's procedural expertise the possibilities are truly astounding. Makes me wish I had purchased the £80 tier to receive all expansions.

I'm truly in awe at all the procedurally generated landscapes, but without living, breathing content (aka life) I think they'd get boring pretty quick. Have you every been to the countryside? Awesome for the first 5 minutes.

Everything will be generated from a set seed - this makes everything look the same for everyone.
However they plan to manually override the systems that have known planets and some planets will be altered to fit in with the ED theme.
10 years ago we knew about our solar system and a couple of planets in others. Pluto was a planet. Today we know of 1000s of other planets and potential planets and they are hoping to add more "real" planets as they go :)

There are only a few billion systems to explore, should keep us busy for a while

I'm hoping that Frontier Development have a very elaborate system in mind which would procedurally give rise to not only planet variations, but also life according to the planet they are derived from.

Its the only reason I understand and support the expansions as a necessary step in ensuring the proper time and care is given to these game mechanics. I am sure Elite Dangerous will look many orders more sophisticated than the stuff No Mans Sky has come up with. And its not so far fetched, given how the game has matured in leaps and bounds since the first kickstarter video was shown.

I wish for a level of diversity much like this:
