Will the Alpha end up being the demo?

Hi folks

Its not very often I start a new topic but I was just wondering if FD have considered releasing the alpha (when finished) as a proper demo for the game when it goes retail.

I think it would be rather good as it does involve a lot of aspects to the game. I also think that the learning curve is just right which allows people to learn at their own pace rather than jumping in at the deep end and getting wasted due to a lack of experience.

Just a thought...

+1 I'll bark to that! :)

I dont think it will be enough of the game to be honest, there will be so much more to it than combat. i think a cutdown version of the full game should be the demo, setup so you can only visit a handful of star systems.

I'd like to see it as a tutorial (optional), as an alternative to having some kind of artificially safe starter area (there should be safe systems, but I don't want to be reminded I'm playing a game by seeing sidewinders constantly crashing into the station).

Of course, that wouldn't prevent it from also being a demo.

There's more alpha to come yet, it's not all combat

Hello Andy.

Yes, at the moment, combat is the main element involved but when the two other alpha stages are included then I think it could become a bit more interesting. Docking and Outfitting will also be included I understand as well as other stuff.

I think the problem with creating a demo which is in effect the whole game with only a handful of systems will effect sales of the retail game. I mean why pay for the full game when you can have all the features of the full game for free with only a handful of star systems?

Full game with a credit cap could be another way of doing it. Do whatever you want, but do it in a basic sidewinder (cos you can't acquire enough credit to upgrade).

To me this represents a good idea but I wouldn't go this way.

I do think there's a role for a demo, but a large part of Elite's enduring appeal was always "learning on the job" .. and a significant loss every time you survived the pirates, only to wipe out on the docking bay doors!

My feeling is that any simulated game should look like one, and have made suggestion in forum before, that your ship computer may be able to project a wire frame flight or basic combat simulator, as part of HUD.

Should an elite pilot take a break from playing the game for a while, there would be a simulated chance to get the feel of controlling flight, before leaving dock. And if a demo were to be released then I would suggest this version ...

If people want the good graphics, and the real feeling of being in space, I feel that they ought to have to take their chances with the rest of us ..

Sounds good to me

ED Alpha is a fantastic demo and you're right about the learning curve. ;)

The ED Alpha does make for a fabulous 'demo'. Whilst I would include the single player stuff at least with the full game (I am not sure how much the multiplayer stuff would be played come release?) , I actually think that anyone should be able to download ED for free... They can sign up, make their commander and then play elite in the demo system Give them a couple of stations and some low value good to trade, rocks to mine, pirates to fight that sort of thing. Maybe even a full player can show up too and make them drool :). When they pony up the cost of the retail game, their account gets fully unlocked, and they have the galaxy at their fingertips.

Good ideas IMHO.

An assembly of the best existing sequences and to come on the page of acceuil of ED's web site, and new store, should be sufficient for a good visual demonstration. Some parts (piloting and fight only) of the alpha or the béta, for a demonstration of real learning. Why not ? woof woof!
