Will there be LAN multiplayer?

A simple question really, I would prefer to have my own private universe between myself and friends. So will there be a LAN or other private server TCP/IP version of the multiplayer? Thankyou.

I believe you can form a private group when you log into the game. This way you still get the same background sim and persistent universe, but you have no direct interaction with players in the /all group. Just the ones in your private group. (Your friends and anyone else you may want to invite)

If you mean completely disconnected universe, then no. If you want to play just with your friends, meet NPCs, but same time feel large impacts of other player's decisions, then closed group is for you :) You will still need Internet connection though.

Answering the OPs question directly, no. You cannot run your own LAN server as with other games such as Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, TF2, L4D.. etc.

The more useful stuff that you CAN do is already covered above.

I wonder if some people can compare this to other companies who required DRM always connected to the internet to be able to play, and then there were the comments that you could play single player if you wanted to.. but the devil in the details is can you play offline, but just not offline with a small group of your own? How about the ability to host your own server?

I think it would be a really cool idea if we could run our own dedicated servers at some point, I like the idea of running my own elite server.

There was mention of SP-Offline mod tools down the line. I wouldn't be surprised if MP-Offline becomes possible at that point.

Can you find the source for that - it would be great if true, but I can't see it happening to the extent that you suggest would make a LAN game possible in the sense that the OP was asking.

Was a while ago, discussed as a far-distant effort, mixed in with discussion on would happen if the servers were eventually turned off (the server code would be released so we can host our own).
Can't remember the source, sorry. I think it was an early vid, which I can't check from here.

Never underestimate the modding community :D
