Will there be ship variants?

Or is this where the customization of the ship comes in like different thrusters.

I noticed the new "Hauler" looks pretty different from anything we have so far with its bright orange emblems.... it even appears to have 4 bangin subs in the rear for those extra long hauls. lol

The Hauler is Zorgon. So could there be a Zorgon Eagle is basically what im asking.

I don't think there will be different manufacturers of models.

It is like cars, BMW make the BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes make the CL class.

You wouldn't get BWM making a Merc CL etc.

At one stage there was some development art showing interchangeable cockpits - not sure if this will happen, probably just drafting out what it will look like.

Would be nice to make your ship more distinctive.

But as you said, they are looking into being able to change engines/shields etc at the cost of cargo space (and money)

It will be possible to have a Cobra MK III that is more specific for long range exploration. (it is one of the kickstarter starting ships). But that is probably more in the line of giving up cargo space for some exploration/repair equipment. Nothing is sure yet though.

True but you do get some makers selling their design, the best example would be the Fiat 127 which became the Ford Fiesta Mk1 and the Seat Malaga as well as a polish makers derivative. Also, you get some companies sharing factories and parts like Ford and Volvo, mainly because they are owned by the same company (as well as Fiat, Lancia and Chrysler) but you also get different companies doing something similar as seen with the Fiat 500 and Ford Ka which has the same platform for two separate companies but different shells or Fiat Cubo, Peugeot and Citroen which are the same car but different engine and badge. Even engines can be shared between different companies for completely different vehicles as Vauxhall used the Fiat 1.3 diesel engine in one of their smaller models.

Since there are lots of examples then why is the possibility of good ship design not copied from one manufacturer from one system to another as can be seen from fake Rollex watches (even Chinese cars for the home market have copied European versions).

I guess the OP is referring to something similar to "that other game", in which variants can be quite dramatic, to the point of modifying parts of the hull to fit more thrusters, for example.

Eitherway, the first Hauler variant will need to remove that IVECO all plastic cockpit ASAP :D

I have been thinking about this for awhile. Variants would give us much more choice without the devs needing to spend ages creating whole new ships.

Some ideas I had for the Krait:

-an ancient ship, favored by pirates, modified numerous times-

Krait Standard - average price 60k

NPC Level: Competent - Elite

Availability:
Empire: None
Fed: Very Rare
Alliance: Very Rare
Indie: Rare
Anarchy: Uncommon

2x mk 2 Weapon hard points * Old style always deployed (+ No extra heat signature - 0 aim assist)

Average Shields
Below average Hull
Very poor energy transfer
Above average speed * Can go faster backwards than forwards * Can afterburn backwards

Krait XL - average price 95k

NPC Level: Dangerous - Elite

Availability:
Empire: None
Fed: Ultra Rare
Alliance: Ultra Rare
Indie: Very Rare
Anarchy: Rare

2x mk 2 Weapon hard points * Old style always deployed (+ No extra heat signature - No aim assist)

1x mk 4 Weapon hard points * Old style always deployed (+ No extra heat signature - No aim assist)

Average Shields
Below average Hull (-5%)
Very poor energy transfer
Above average speed * Can go faster backwards than forwards * Can afterburn backwards

Krait X - average price 125k

NPC Level: Deadly - Elite

Availability:
Empire: None
Fed: None
Alliance: None
Indie: Ultra Rare
Anarchy: Very Rare

3x mk 4 Weapon hard points * New style deployable

Average Shields
Below average Hull (-5%)
Poor energy transfer
Above average speed * Can go faster backwards than forwards * Can afterburn backwards

Krait Trader - average price 75k

-A few cunning/stupid traders sick of getting spaced by pirates in anarchy systems came up with the idea to remove most of the internal walls and structure supports of a ship favored by pirates Turning it into a makeshift trading vessel. The hope being that pirates won't prey on a fellow pirate-

NPC Level: Mostly Harmless - Elite

Availability:
Empire: None
Fed: Ultra Rare
Alliance: Ultra Rare
Indie: Very Rare
Anarchy: Ultra Rare

2x mk 2 Weapon hard points * Old style always deployed (+ No extra heat signature - No aim assist)

Average Shields (+10%)
Abysmal Hull (-75%) * 75% extra cargo space
Very poor energy transfer
Above average speed * Can go faster backwards than forwards * Can afterburn backwards

Krait Pirate Special - average price 250 - 500k

-A design originally piloted by Jack Plank, aka the dreaded "mauve pirate". Pirate Special's are Painted pure black with custom Jolly Rogers.

NPC Level: Elite

Availability:
Empire: None
Fed: None
Alliance: None
Indie: None
Anarchy: Ultra Rare

6x mk 2 Weapon hard points * Old style always deployed (+ No extra heat signature - No aim assist)

Average Shields (+20%)
Below average Hull (-10%)
Poor energy transfer
Above average speed (+10%) * Can go faster backwards than forwards * Can afterburn backwards

More content, more interesting, more variants and dynamic gameplay, sounds cool to me. + don't have to re-do the models like crazy.

Based on what we know, ships will be fully customizable. To what extent, we don't really know yet, I remember DB mentioning that passenger vehicles (Dolphin, Orca and Beluga), despite being quite light on armament, could be fully outfitted for combat, by removing passenger cabins and replacing it with more guns. That was just one random example, but apparently we can expect to radically change ships, which will affect how they look too.

While the cockpit styles seen above look more like concepts than anything, we've seen better than that: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ukHFK30VaU0/UOGbOmOClnI/AAAAAAAAAVw/EAAAAMPbE70/s1600/Engines2.jpg
Not only the engines change, but the overall width of the ship at the back and at the front too. Considering engines CAN be changed, this looks like an actual example of ship customization, which hugely affects the ship.

For all we know, each ship could have dozens of variants. That would be a huge surprise, but still, we can hope.

Cars have series.
BMW 3 series.
Opel Astra.

the variant's

Hot hach
Hatchback
Coupe
cargo
combo
Station
H2L2 exte height extra longer.
MPV
Cross country.
Cabrio
CC

In space game

Cobra III
Vanguard
Sentinel
Interceptor
Explorer
Bomber
Cargo
Cargo XL
Courier
Express
freighter
Limousine
Custom
Endurance

The difference could be how systems are balanced. But also how it could be extended.

Ok let's think about this. They are trying to simulate realism where possible. 400 billion stars and only a few manufacturers? They need to ad some randomization to these ships. Think borderlands guns with more art and less drunken missiles.

Having a finite number of ships is probably the most idiotic idea for a game of this scale.

Mostly Harmless Questions

Arn: Will the game include detailed technical breakdowns for ships, weapons, modules and other equipment?
Yes. We will be providing more information than is there now, and also more variants on each type. Most elements of your ship will also have the ability to be ‘tuned up’ to get extra performance/efficiency/weight reduction as appropriate.

Am I reading that correctly. More Variants of each ship? Or just different MK's (Cobra Mk 1, Mk 3 etc)?
