I'm going to take a really rough guess here, But I'd say between 2000 - 3000 additional players ??
This rough guess is based off the 1125 premium beta backers that pledged during the kickstarter campaign that ended with around 25,000 overall backers.
That number of overall backers reached 50K yesterday, so as a wild wild unsubstantiated guess, its possible the number of premium beta backers doubled too?

Alpha 2.0 was February 2014 wasn't it?
I thought it could have been something to do with the end of the kickstarter campaign but that ended a month earlier (5th January 2013).
