Newcomer / Intro Will we ever come across aliens out there?

Planetary landings is one of the announced expansion aims, along with being able to walk around your ship and space stations.

I guess if we go in First Person mode combat WILL have to be part of it... but I almost add "sadly" to that because of what it implies.

But remember, plenty of people play Elite doing their best to avoid combat altogether, living a more or less peaceful life of trading and exploration. FPS should allow for the same thing - yes combat will have to be taken into account (and done well with good mechanics) but it should not be the focus any more than it is in the space sim.

I'd hate to have it that the only good alien was a dead alien ;)

Well, given that 100% of conflicts so far in the game have been humans killing humans, it doesn't necessarily follow that all contact with the Thargoids must be hostile. In terms of exploration, it would be a neat mechanic to be able to get out of your ship and do really detailed scans or collect samples that would, if returned, put multipliers on the value of the data. Additionally, to be able to wander around a starport talking to players or finding good contacts to be able to buy black market goods and the like would be awesome. Second Life might make a good example here, if we can ignore the understandaby horrible draw distances on models for a second.

I avoid PvP if and when I can, as I'm a rubbish combat pilot. However, I'm very comfortable with FPS games. That doesn't mean that all first-person aspects of the game must be combat-focused.

Besides, the main part of the issue I have with PvP is that it's generally not consensual on both sides. While I appreciate that open is, well, open, and there is always a chance that a CMDR is going to want to blow my ship up for the lulz, that position doesn't entail that I have to enjoy it. I play open for many reasons; engaging in mindless pewpew against someone else isn't one of them (the key point here is "mindless"), and to have a player force another to play that way is actually a rather interesting ethical issue in a game where "freedom" is featured heavily in the marketing materials. Attempts to engage in that kind of conversation with the 1% pure PvP camp are usually met with grunts, confused looks and sweat beading on thick-set, furrowed brows, but I digress.

If I'm in an FPS-style warzone, I would happily engage in pewpew with other CMDRs - I'm not an FPS pro by any stretch of the imagination (indeed, I think the bragging e-peen-oriented culture prevalent in modern FPS is a cancer on Anglophone society and anyone who engages in it should be waterboarded), but I have both the desire and ability to engage in FPS without my doom being the inevitable outcome. I also like the idea of a futuristic space-based FPS with a reasonably mature player base (think BF2142 rather than Halo.) Additionally, my presence in a very constrained combat zone that one would, I hope, have to make a deliberate decision to enter would arguably indicate that I know - and agree with - what I'm getting into. By the same token, if I go to a space-based conflict zone and there are CMDRs on the other side, I will shoot at them as a matter of priority over any NPC, because I know they're going to be coming after me. Another issue I have with PvP in Elite as it stands is that my presence in open - in a galaxy of 400 billion stars - is taken to indicate that I'm willing to engage in meaningless PvP combat when that's not necessarily the case. Many of my alliance comrades are, but it's just not my focus in the game. It's the meaninglessness of much PvP that I have an issue with, not its existence.

For the record, I think player piracy is an important and necessary part of the game. It's only the CMDRs that want to do nothing but blow up other CMDRs that I have an issue with.
I guess when I talk about FPS gameplay, I would only enjoy combat if it were focused and objective-oriented, which is why I took the example of Battlefield over DayZ (which is also fun but not for the mindless ganking that goes on on so many servers.)

Thargoids were the reason I gave up playing the original Elite. I got to a stage where pretty much every time I jumped (equivalent to frame shift between systems in Elite: Dangerous), the jump would be intercepted, you'd be brought out into witch space and have to battle a few Thargoids (and they were tough). Totally disrupted the flow of the game IMO. I'm sure DB and his team won't do that again but you never know....

My favourite contact scenario:

A player explorer far out discovers a strange non human base. When closing in he/she gets interdicted, incapacitated and swallowed by some big alien vessel. Then they do some probing (aliens always do that you know) and find out about humans. Then more and more encounters happen close to human space. Then the real fun begins.

100% agree with the sentiment!!!

I havent played B4 in any proper way (i only installed it to prove how good my rig was) - my son plays it.

But I think along the same lines entirely.
I am put off most PVP in games because of the general attitude of the (usually juvenile) players, the abusive chat, and the whole cauldron of bile associated with the players of said genre. (for the most part)

That said I remember many a happy and hilarious evening spent with a few friends playing COD in a private match - and isn't that the point ?

Isn't a game of PVP so much more fun when...... after all is done and the combat is over,,,,.... everyone says - "good game guys" and has a laugh about it?

Maybe I'm an old sad geek but .... I always thought fun was universal in a game and not just for the winner ?

Keep PVP fun and we all enjoy the thrill of combat against another skilled human combatant. If it ceases to be fun some of us will be chased off to fighting NPC's with no human interaction Boooo!
Jeez! I don't half get preachy when I've had a drink over a few thousand LY's:eek:
