So i've seen the Oculus Rift hardware mentioned quite a bit ever since the early stages of the E: D kickstarter and now it crops up in a number of design related threads so i thought we could run a poll to get some idea on the amount of people here that will be buying this hardware for playing on Elite.

Edit:

Or maybe folks have it already and plan to use it, if so don't let the wording of the poll put you off.

Vote 'Yes' if you have it and plan to use it as well as the poll option

Vote 'No' if you have it but wont use it in E: D (for whatever reason you strange creature!)

I hope that makes sense :)

i dont understand the last option? apart from seeing that dam word that people think is trendy to use.

and no i probably wont be, I will be unsocial as it is just by playing elite, though having a cool 3D headset It would be no different to me locking my self in a dark room and ignoring my family. sorry for being negative buddy.

Jonty is a elite meme. You can read it in this instance to be like 'I dont have a clue what you mean?' (as in you haven't heard of Oculus Rift).

It's the 'banana' option that some forums use in a poll. That might confuse you even more!

ah so its a Red Herring. still the word £%&*$ as a meme for elite is well i cant say, but suffice to say its not in my book of elite memes.

but going back to the head set, isnt Sony doing one also.

SONY HEADSET

I like the idea as an alternative to forking out for 2 new screens (and the desk space it'll save me). I am concerned it'll make me feel sick though, a warning on the website suggests that people who feel sick while trying to read in a car may suffer from nausea. I don't really want to pay a chunk of cash to feel ill playing ED

Since I have only one fully functioning eye (haharr!) I'll have to wait until the consumer kit is out before committing to Oculus Rift.

Some 3D systems work reasonably well for those of us without stereo vision but others just result in a blurry mess and a headache. Even Oculus won't commit to which way it'll be for the Rift; the FAQ on their site simply says to try it and see.

I love the idea of a game environment that responds 1:1 to head movements, unlike TrackIR which always seemed a bit of a kludge. So for that alone I'd happily pony up for a Rift. But it's all down to the implementation of the 3D. If it works with my eyes and doesn't give me a migraine I'll consider it, otherwise I'll stay old-school and spend the money on a much larger monitor.

On an even more practical note it's not even clear whether the final version of the Rift headset will fit over prescription glasses. If it won't, the whole discussion is moot.

Hmm.....

I wanna have it, so voted for "Yes" but i think it has to wait until i can afford it.
But the Tec behind is so good, this is a "must have" thingie for us Nerds :)

I will definately get one if supported by ED eventually, unlike a FPS where there is a conflic between mouse & headset due to the head being fixed relative to the body, in a cockpit it would fit the scenario perfectly.

The only downside will be (as with any stereo system) the need for a minimum of 120fps from the video card, and I'm not reaching 120 in many games now , will probably need SLI.

EDIT: Maybe add "and I also never head of google" to the last option

If it is good, I'll buy one. If it is not, I won't :D

(by good I include price also :p).

I do hope Elite supports it though.

I'm pretty sure extensive use of the Rift will give you headaches as your eye is looking at a screen that is a few millimetres away from it's surface. Your eye isn't meant to concentrate or focus on something that close for too long even looking at a monitor for long periods is bad for your eyes and you should always concentrate on a far point in the room for a moment once in a while, something that not a lot of us do.

I do not like the idea of the Rift nor it's promotional video as it is just a lot of people in industry shouting 'yeah this is great!'.
This got Kickstarter funding didn't it?

I really, really want one, but I know I'm probably not going to be able to justify the expense.

I know a few people who use the Vuzix iWear (I think it's the iWear that's for games - they do one for gaming and one for just video) glasses for sim-racing and they all say it's fantastic to use, hugely improving the immersion. The Vuzix ones are let down my a low resolution though.

As soon as a pre-order is available I will be buying one, if it is only half as good as the hype then it will still be utterly fantastic.

I think that's the one problem they all share and the thing that most puts me off buying one.

Just taking a look a the specs:

* Twin high-resolution 640×480 (920,000 pixels) LCD displays
* Equivalent to a 62" screen viewed from 9 feet
Can you imagine what a 640 x 480 screen would look like on a 62" screen!? A mouse cursor the size of your hand! :)

I will be getting ORift at some point, not necessarily at launch (or just for Elite D).

It's the most exciting new hardware in a long time.
