General / Off-Topic Win 10 ptw

Doesn't mean much, it's just an attempt to get deeper into corporate fleet management. As the article mentions, some OEMs are already offering a similar service, and Microsoft would be negligent to not go full stack. I can see them try to get small, cheap office boxes based on low-range office hardware (think NUC or Mac Mini) or even an ARM platform into those channels. With their peripherals including a pretty damn bad webcam, all they need is a branded monitor for a full-Microsoft desktop.

I can't imagine this actually catching on enough for Microsoft to force anybody into it, so what it sounds like to me is if you wanna pay MS some ghastly monthly figure you can let them control your software and hardware upgrades. Not sure what market it applies to exactly except maybe corporate, allowing people who REALLY want to chafe their own IT dept to do so.

I was 30 in 1985, bought an Atari 1040. Then watched as MS took over all business operating systems, and computers away from IBM. Shortly after that started buying game companies and small apps companies for computers as well.
Windows systems were updated every few years forcing everyone to upgrade, win 98, win xp, win 7. THEN MS releases win 10 with never a newer version coming out, just free upgrades. I've waited to see the other shoe drop. So yeah, I'm curious.
THX for your conclusions. I guess we will see.

Mate my shoe dropped during Mac OS 8. Which was Win OS ... 3.1?

We live in a world compred to there. I long for the Apple II days. But whatever. I gotta say this crap doesn't sound much more than anything else. I just can't jive who will buy this crap. Trying to be a modern IT dept dude, this doesn't add anything to my productivity line. There is NO WAY even with MS manged upgrades any IT dept is sweating less. Indeed sounds like a nightmare.

It means that "software as a subscription service" trend finally won and we can finally give up and kill ourselves.

Or simply switch to a less 'loot crate' OS experiences :)

Linux Mint (and there are other Distro's like Manjaro and Ubuntu that are suitable for Windows refugees) has been my route out of MS dependency (and abusive monopolising) for 90% of my needs, and my Windows 7 PC is still a decent gaming rig for the next decade, in which time i might work out gaming on Linux ;)

With Windows 10 Microsoft simply showed me the door as a customer, and for that i'm actually thankful.

I wonder how many of the above respondents have bothered to read the article, or even better the article it's based on… I get it, it's funny to bash Microsoft, but really folks, get a grip on the topic.

All the article says is they are gearing up to release a pc system with win 10 for a monthly fee. Basically it would mean the PC business era would be like consoles with fixed hardware making it easier for them to patch etc.

Nothing new and people would have to buy into it by leasing the machines. With PC hardware so random it's one thing for OS makers to provide stability with all the drivers I can see why they went this route and it's one route that will give M$ a Apple like hardware model so they will have machines for different spec jobs but ALL the same for that specific job. Much like entry level Macs upto the HUGE expensive ones

This is one of those deals that actually reduces choice.

Its potentially giving microsoft complete control of your hardware. Once they have that market they will be able to dictate what it is to be a pc. In essence its replicating mobile whereby you buy prebuilt models with preconfigured operating systems and the ability to lock out software they dont want you to use.

Want a Threadripper 3. Sorry we dont offer that as intel gave us Gazillions of dollars. So you need to buy intel equiped kit.

Want a graphics card. Well we only offer pcs with entry level graphics cards. If you require a more boutique gaming experience then buy the xbox2

Want to play your games on steam. Well sorry but our PCS do not support steam as its incompatible. Instead we recommend Windows xbox zone.

Apple tried the one-size-fits-all machinery to accommodate a single software build plan.
They failed to dominate the PC world. Why is the PC world copying a failed approach?

some people value convenience over choice.

and it's giving the customer the chance to not care a bit about the hardware.

i think there's a market for this and it makes sense. if you have other needs, then you buy or build your own machine, and install your preferred os. simple (while it's still possible, that is).

actually, this is not so different from buying a walled garden mac. actually, it's exactly the same except you lease instead of buying.

Oh there is a market for this as the vast majority of people dont care, and that includes me and you on certain things. Everyone has their triggers and blind spots.

More and more our society is going from one were people own things, to one were people lease things. We lease cars, we lease operating systems, games, we rent houses etc etc.
There will come a time when only the super rich own things, and the majority will be living in indentured servitude, living our entire lives on what is in essence a corporate consumerist hamster wheel, being brain washed since childhood into thinking this is the only way to live.

this time is already here, it's been a while! it's only getting more fancy. i.e. harder to resist.

If I could play Elite and TESO under Linux, I'd have already done that.

(And I also still use Win7 on most of my computers, btw.)
