Hardware & Technical Windows 10 will be free for the first year, for the hackers, also

Give the behaviour and standards of M$ in recent years, should we really trust them to install irrevocable changes to what is an intolerability unstable OS?

Elite promised that it would be issued for XP. Sadly, they have not done that, opting for the easier route instead. What exactly will work under W10 and more importantly, what will not?

There seems to be a number of projects ongoing to develop workable, stable OSs which might be used as alternatives to M$.

Not sure what Microsoft products you've been using recently, but everything that they have released since Vista has been extremely stable. Vista was the last operating system that they released that had stability issues. All of the dislike that Microsoft has received as of the past few years has been a result of a change in user interface, not due to a lack of stability. The Windows 10 kernel will be extremely similar to the 8.1 kernel, which was extremely similar to the 7 kernel, so compatibility issues with applications will be kept to a minimum.

There have been dozens of open-source operating systems that serve as an alternative to Windows, but none of them have a large market share; therefore, very few software developers will bother to waste their time creating an application that supports an operating system that is only used by a handful of people.

so compatibility issues with applications will be kept to a minimum.

Minimum? Well, I'm convinced.

but none of them have a large market share;

Always the problem. But most I've looked at over the years have suffered mainly from unfriendly interfaces, with little or no reliable support.

I'd love to be able to say that that will change but any who, like me, have looked at the alternatives over the years will agree, the reality is not quite the same.

But there are a couple of developments on the horizon which might make a difference. Major vendors adapting a version of Linux as their own. A single OS will ensure stability since it will be in the companies interest to ensure that it is. Interference from third party script writers can be kept to a minimum. Steam is not my favourite company personally, but they are currently testing a Beta version of their SteamOS. The final die later. http://store.steampowered.com/steamos

Another approach is an open sourced OS aimed at Windows comparability. https://www.reactos.org/

Not sure how well this is doing frankly. I am a member of the project but getting any information from anyone else is not easy.

As things stand, both projects in hand, there aren't many absolutes to go on yet. But it does seem to be the way things will be going. M$ isn't the friendly Uncle Bill of old.

All of which is essentially irrelevant to my original point:

Does anyone trust M$ sufficiently to exchange what we have now, an unstable and problematic OS by irrevocably installing what amounts to a freebee with little or no assurance it won't be worse?

You have yet to make a valid argument that any Windows operating system past the launch date of Vista has been "unstable and problematic", and to be completely honest, any such argument would most likely be based purely off of anecdotal evidence.

Whilst I use Windows daily, wether it's 3.11, 98SE, 2000, XP or 10TP in a VM, or bootcamped 7 or 8.1 on a real machine - it's not what I'd call stable. At all.

As a mainframe guy - this sort of "reliability" simply isn't.

I will be installing the upgrade from windows 7 to 10 on both my machines, mainly for the DX12 advantages in gaming.
But first i will be waiting for reviews and also some word from ED that it will be supporting it.

Is it free only for a year (limited time trial) or free to install in the first year and you keep it. (no trial)

It is entirely based upon anecdotal evidence, duh!

What other evidence is there?

If you're going to attempt these seemingly clever intellectual sounding, counter-plays you might at least ensure you understand what they mean.

Pretty sure it's "free to upgrade" - I suspect you won't be getting a full installation ISO and key to keep.

I think some people already have E: D running on Win 10 without any issues so I think I'll be upgrading as soon as it's RTM

Maybe your installations are fluffed, or your settings are messing things up? Only thing I can think of.
I haven't had a single OS crash since the release of 7 and I use Windows every single day (8 hours at work, then an additional 6 after work - it's shocking I'm not blind yet actually, lol).

OS: Win8.1

to be fair the "8.1 on a real machine" is the only supported version there - all the rest are obsolete, out of support, not supported or not yet released
