General / Off-Topic Windows 10

So... Windows 10... Should I upgrade? Are my concerns about security and anonymity with Win10 justified? Reshade and mods compatibility in general (SweetFX/ReShade and all its affiliates, ENB Series, Witcher 3 mods, Skyrim mods)?

I'm on Win8 (not 8.1 as 8.1 is horrible towards directx injectors and such) and honestly everything is working flawlessly. I am going to buy a new PC at the end of the summer. But the free Win10 upgrade offer expires at the end of this month.

Thanks! :)

PS. Mods can put this thread where it suits best.

I have no issues with 10 currently. As with all windows OS's I'd recommend spending 30 mins going through every setting and turning anything set to auto, either off or on as per your preference.

My only irritation with it is windows update, I cannot at the moment set it to tell me when updates are available. If it's on it will automatically download and install them for me, even if I am currently gaming. As such it is turned off permanently. I would like the old middle ground back but there we go.

It is, very fast compared to 7 (never used 8) and tbh I can't imagine going back now.

Make of that what you will!

I 'upgraded' from W7 to W10 last Saturday!

I did a clean install and all is well. For ED I haven't noticed any difference. I play VR DK2 too.

The amount of telemetry though! Gasp! I turned off those badboys and used an app to tidy up the ones you can't do without cmd prompt. Loads of YouTube vids about this.

Other games? FRAPs told me I lost about 5% frames which isn't too bad going up two generations! GTA5 and Witcher 3.

Good luck

I'd say upgrade while it's still free. I went win10 from win7 and like it. I upgraded to get the hardware registered, then did a fresh rebuild.

Many topics on this forum discussing the pro's and con's of Windows 10 upgrade, so I'd advocate searching for those first.

Well, the free Win10 upgrade might officialy expire come the end of this month, but that deadline is only put in place to give customers a sense of urgency I think. I would be very surprised if they wouldn't set another deadline after that.
Granted, that is a bit of a gamble though :)
But I am on the fence too about win10 for the very same reasons you just mentiones. Everything works perfectly for me on Windows 7, so I'm not really anxious to switch to Win10 either.

You should at least do the upgrade just to get it registered. You have 30 days to roll back to 7 if you don't like it. After you upgrade, you can always do a fresh install of Windows 10 later since your computer is already certified for a genuine copy.

Windows 10 is much snappier than 7, I'll give it that (especially if you have an SSD). Also, as they start integrating it with the Xbox in the UWP, older versions will become more obsolete before they're officially no longer supported.

It is worth upgrading- once done, even a wipe with no product key will activate Windows 10 again afterwards, and a fresh install will likely run a lot better.

The checks Windows 10 does at the start will highlight any potential compatibility, and generally the only technical issue is usually anti-virus / security software that may need a revision (I'm looking at you, Kaspersky!).

Microsoft say that Windows 10 will be the last version, and all future updates will be iterations of that. Therefore, it will be inevitable that Windows 10 will be the norm... let alone when future titles will require DirectX12! ;)

The Windows 10 upgrade is to enable W10 installs on your Windows Live (or similar) account, IIRC.
If you have a spare harddrive and the disks for your current W7 or W8, install that on the spare drive, and upgrade to W10 before the deadline.
You should be approved for free upgrades after that point.

But, I am getting regular BSODs due to the current build of W10. It is a Windows 10 issue (or so vNidia says), and they have no fix. Wait for a patch, they say.

So, upgrade on a spare hard drive to get the free account upgrade, and carry on as you are for a while.

Windows 10's bad privacy is for advertisers to track your actions to try and find whatever product they can sell to you based on your personality. This can be prevented though if you have an adblock, an anti-adblock killer, and an anti-anti adblock killer-killer (get it? lol). Windows 10's shadowy privacy is probably just an attempt as well to find terrorists, but no need to worry because everyone here isn't a terrorist and just because I don't want Windows 10 either doesn't mean i'm a terrorist, either. If you don't want Win 10, you'll have a few black SUV's and other suspicious vehicles park near your house, but they don't intend to hurt you--in Canada, non-violent people who know a bit too much have the right to remain alive anyways.

But since I know i'm being monitored I might as well publicly admit that I won't get Windows 10 right away, but yes i'll get the free upgrade just before it expires, so whoever you people are out there please be patient and for your own advisory to not waste your own time, please do not attempt to sneak it in my computer any more. But anyways, if you are going to get Win 10, you are going to have to exercise your neck every now and then because the buttons are bigger than ever and some interfaces will use up the entire monitor--heck, the new trend is just one big button covering the screen, so get ready because the new generation isn't too mouse-and-keyboard desktop friendly and you'll be moving your whole head around to find several particular buttons. Exercise your fingers as well, excessively scrolling through mobile-first pages is a new trend too.

I would be more concerned about your youtube account than your windows 10 license.
You can disable most home calling features during installation and you should make sure that you don't use a microsoft account, just set it to local user. Disable Cortana, don't use Edge and you should be fine.

I am a great fan of privacy, but I think google, facebook, the NSA and your local government already spoiled it. Microsoft isn't the first and not the last to jump on the train...
