General / Off-Topic Windows 10

So... Windows 10... Should I upgrade? Are my concerns about security and anonymity with Win10 justified? Reshade and mods compatibility in general (SweetFX/ReShade and all its affiliates, ENB Series, Witcher 3 mods, Skyrim mods)?

I'm on Win8 (not 8.1 as 8.1 is horrible towards directx injectors and such) and honestly everything is working flawlessly. I am going to buy a new PC at the end of the summer. But the free Win10 upgrade offer expires at the end of this month.

Thanks! :)

PS. Mods can put this thread where it suits best.

Do you need to upgrade? Not really.
Should you? Not really.
I'd do it simply because I'd not want to lose out on a free OS.

My Screenie(s) submissions are all using EDFX and on W10.
You can turn off 99.9% of personal data submission.

If you decide to upgrade, download the ISO, burn it to DVD, then install it from the DVD. Lots of people (including myself) had issues upgrading directly and an install from DVD, with format, fixed it right up.

.

The moment you used a search engine, or Facebook, or twitter or any form of social network your security and anonymity vanished. Remember, if you don't pay for it you are the product. If you have a smart phone it's gone big time.

I'm not saying it's good, because it's not, but the horse has long since bolted from the stable on that score.

My opinion ? No. You will have problems, and yes, it will collect personal data from you even if you disable everything.

I've been using Windows 10 for a while now. Apart from the slow download (mostly due to my DSL at the time) I haven't had any issues.

Don't listen to the tin foil hat brigade. Win10 doesn't collect any more data than your mobile phone does.

WHAT? That's it! I'm going back to my old phone.

Also, get ready to use PowerShell. A LOT:

Windows 10 lacks many options to change things and some of Windows 7's customization features are missing in Win 10. Things will be considered apps instead of programs, allowing you to delete useless bloatware ones easily, but unfortunately they will still remain on your computer--you just won't see them. Programs, however, can be deleted and wiped off the hard drive for good without stupid PowerShell.

In other words, Canadian watchdog authorities launched an investigation some time ago after Microsoft allegedly violated Canadian privacy laws. Microsoft, you do realize that you're dealing with foreign jurisdictions that have laws against certain TOS conditions that even an individual within that foreign jurisdiction agrees upon?

If you don't want Win 10, you'll have a few black SUV's and other suspicious vehicles park near your house

Though survelliance gives some double bladed opportunities. You can buy vital information about competitors for example.

The horses are breeding; it still makes good sense to close the stable door.

I really like W10. I stuck with XP to the bitter, (oh so very, very bitter), end. It isn't brilliant. I have a few     les sich as getting permissions which is all but impossible and if I click my Download folder, I invariably get Documents.

But all in all, especially given that I had little choice, having bought a new PC, I'm satisfied with W10.

Microsoft say that Windows 10 will be the last version, and all future updates will be iterations of that. Therefore, it will be inevitable that Windows 10 will be the norm... let alone when future titles will require DirectX12! ;)

And we all trust Aunty M$, don't we?

Any company prepared to do this in order to foist their product on users willy nilly has immediately lost my confidence. Nearly happened to me several times and has happened to others I know. The current upgrade window I get on my 8.1 machine doesn't have a 'no thanks' option - unwary users will get it whether they want it or not. Why would anyone do that?

I have XP, 7 and 8.1 respectively on my three machines. They all work fine and do the job I've assigned to them ta awfully. Why would I need to learn a new OS for little if any perceived benefit?

Call me a Luddite if you must but my computers ain't broke and don't need fixing.

Thank you very much everyone! People have some made some valid points here and there. :)

I have a partition for xp just to run one game. People use DoS box. The real problem is in Corporate Banking world were application were specially built to run off ie6.

Thanks for this post. I use a crap load of mods in most of my games and I've always used injector based mods in all my games so far, so this is a very important aspect of upgrading the OS. Probably more important than the whole privacy aspect of Win10... I do plan on selling this rig when getting the new one and having Win10 installed on it would probably be better when selling it.
Cheers!

"Hey Cortana, do you listen to everything I say?"

Cortana closes.

"Hey Cortana, do you work for the NSA?"

Cortana closes.

Haha, that's a good one, NWO.

I have installed GWX Control Panel on my desktop, laptop and the wifes desktop. it finally shut up the constant nagging to install Win 10 DME (data mining edition)

I can't recommend it highly enough, it stops the nagging, deletes any auto downloaded win 10 crap and even turns off the win 10 upgrade icon on the system bar!

here's a link if anyone is interested: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/
