Just a heads up - I just took delivery of the above Win11 "upgrade". You may need to look at your sound settings after this as it knocked them all out for me.

I'm using a Strix Rog Pro soundcard and it set everything back to default. The main problemette was the fact I no longer had sound through my cans as it changed to speakers instead.

It also reset the equaliser and bit rates.

It didn't take long to diagnose and fix but... well... y'know... Microsoft.

Found the guy not using Equalizer APO! (I'm also on Canary so the whole lot resets about once a week - PEACE has the advantage that it will just reapply everything automatically but the disadvantage that every time you have an update you need a second reboot to get the APO to bite...)

every maj windows os update has knocked my custom sound settings out and ive had to re config it to how it was
i expect the same to happen when i go by way of 11🤷‍♂️

Another thing with 24H2 is that it does practically nothing I'd find useful. My PC isn't a Copilot+ one (or ++ or whatever jargon MS wants to call it today) and I don't think I have an NPU. Not sure on that but anyway... I have no interest in AI and it just isn't blowing my skirt up.

If I could use AI from my Corvette to destroy the Thargoid threat once and for all, find their home planet and boil it up then hop over to Raxxla and have a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster with them, then I might sit up a bit straighter.

Funny thing. When I went from 10 to 11, my sound was fine. It surprised me.

Mind you, the "upgrades" are different for everybody and what works for me will probably not work for someone else.

Oh, one last nugget on 24H2 an then I'll shut up - it took a lot longer than previous upgrades * and rebooted about four times. Once, my screen sat blankly staring at me for about 20 seconds, all in a nice shade of grey.

my last win 10 update did decide to hide my mouse pointer/cursor until it had fully updated so i went through the motions of a mouse batt check unnecessarily
and after saying 100% completed had me waiting watching the swirly thing a further 20 mins, if i was a novice pc user i may have switched the pc off thinking something was not right but i knew just to wait it out no matter what............

I've been reading a bunch of horror stories about the 24H2 update over the last few months. One thing (and it's a relatively minor one but possibly something a few people might care about) is that "Wordpad" gets taken away. If you happen to like Wordpad then you can back it up and restore it again afterwards:

24H2 popped up in my updates yesterday but I've paused my updates for a week in anticipation so I can be better prepared for any adverse ED effects by reading posts like this. Thanks @Tyres O'Flaherty!

I caught up on industry news so I'll just throw in this update will be offered to a lot more people from today onwards. Earlier versions of it had problems with various hardware (incl. some pretty common printer setups) so Microsoft paused it for a whole bunches of flavour of system.

They took that pause off two days ago and the delay on propagation is usually about two days so... it's gonna pop up for the first time for a LOT of people.

There's three things which might be relevant to non-CoPilot:
  • gets you back to ONE version of Teams regardless of whether it's tied to a personal or corporate account
  • Finally gets rid of the bits of Power Scheme management you had to use oldskool Control Panel for.
  • Introduces a way of doing "hot" updates so you won't have to reboot at all after an update.

There's some seriously major surgery on the real guts of it which aren't directly visible to the user, but will definitely help cut down on BSODs and GSODs and maybe even help performance a little bit.

Ever since that update i've had sound issues with my laptop. It keeps setting to low a volume and have to increase of decrease the volume by one notch to get the right volume back. Ever time I watch a video or use a app that uses sound i have to change to volume.

I updated to 24H2 several days ago.

All my sound stuff works and nothing got changed, as far as I can tell. I have an external sound interface, as well as bluetooth headphones and bluetooth ear buds.

I guess I'm being lucky :)

24H2 had some problems with certain sound driver versions, and the upgrade was blocked for those systems, until more recent drivers were installed. I don't know if that was the case here, but sounds familiar.

Yep, Wordpad is dead apparently. At least according to MS update notes - I haven't checked.

I am thinking of ditching microsoft spydows for linux
