Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 10, is it worth it?

Hi,

I have built a dedicated game PC for Elite Dangerous. It is now running Windows 7 and pretty stable with my NVidia drivers for GTX970. I was wondering if there is a benefit in upgrading to Windows 10. For example, does the new DirectX layer bring me new (better/nicer) graphics?

Thanks.

The basic answer is no. Windows 10 is slicker, and does a lot of things a little faster maybe but nothing ground breaking. Win 10 has a few bugs / issues with BSoD which I never had with Win 7. I wouldn't go back to Win 7 though, it's smooth enough for me. If you are enjoying Win 7 and have no issues, there is no need to upgrade.

IMO you should upgrade only if you have a reason to. Some new feature, or specific hardware support, or some another specific reason.
There is no point in upgrading if everything work fine now, you just have a chance it will break something and nothing more.

No it doesn't, since Elite doesn't support Dx12.
Currently I do not recommend upgrade to Win10 for Elite dedicated PC, maybe after ~6 months..

If everything works, do not try to break it ;)

Running Windows 10 on 4 out 5 of my machines. With the exception of my Oculus Rift I've not had any problems.

Disclaimer - I rebuild my machines at regular intervals (anything between 4 weeks and 3 months) so I wouldn't class myself as an everyday user.

Mileage may vary

I have 2 970s and running Windows 10, I can say that Elite feels more stable since I've upgraded to Windows 10. Frame rate is about 10 to 20 FPS higher then before( mind you Elite runs well above 100 fps for me) and the stuttering is all but gone. Nvidia has good drivers for Windows 10 and all my games run a lot better now. Fallout 4 runs around 80 to 100 FPS once you disable Vsync in the control panel.

If you've got 7 or 8 then chances are 10 is already there on your HD. I wasn't sure when it came out but took the plunge and to be fair, 10 is like a more up to date 7 and hasn't caused me any problems. I never bothered with 8 so my upgrade was from 7 *64 (pro ultimate).

Win 10 is an outstanding upgrade from Win 8 and an excellent upgrade from Win 7. I've been using 10 since the day it was released. I came from a Win 7 setup. Win 10 has a lot of little features that are an improvement over win 7 or 8 and it feels very fast. However, you should also know that there have been some FPS issues with win 10 and some systems using AMD video cards when running Elite.

Windows 8 is evil and should be burnt on the stake. Depending on your laptop, I'd say yes go for Win 10.

Win 8 and to a slightly lesser extent Win 8.1 should as you say is evil. It goes with the other monstrosity M$ brought out called Millennium and Vista. PURE EVIL!

That aside, as others have said above me, makes not the slightest to ED or other games not able to use DX12. However as an OS it is slick and worthy successor to win 7 (BTW, if you look under the hood of 10 a look of 7 is still present, so it is safe hands).

I own an IT Company, (Business to Business) and in the 3 odd years 8 and 8.1 have been on sale i have sold 10 copies, 9 of those we where asked to take it back to 7!

Thank you all for your kind, warming and loving responses with regards to Windows 7.

I notice the consensus is that it doesn't make a whoolah of a difference towards Elite Dangerous, which means I'll be staying with W7 for now, as the game is the only thing running on the machine anyways.

Check that your motherboard has drivers for windows 10 - my Asus ones does not. If not, your stuck with whatever generic drivers windows 10 supplies.

That's my take on it for now as well. Since M$ is offering the free upgrade path until (I think) July 2016 I am going to wait until all the bugs are sorted out.

But in the end (and solely for the extended support) I will upgrade to Win 10.

Unless the Wine Project finds a way to run all the programs that are anchored in the Windows platform,,,,,, :D

Make an image of your current OS and upgrade to Windows 10. Should you have trouble with it you can go back within 15 Minutes. ;)

you don't have to do that, as if you upgrade to 10, it gives you the option to completely roll back to 7 with no trace of 10 being on your system

I'm waiting until the last day the free upgrade offer to 10 expires, before upgrading. Have seen a ton of little issues/bugs reported on the gaming front, and am reasonably confident they'll be fixed by middle 2016 when the free upgrade offer expires. Before then, I'm sticking with 7.

It was completely painless for me (I dithered for ages), but I suppose it's possible something obscure in my Steam library no longer works. Eventually I just wanted to get it out the way so I could stop worrying about it.

Upgrade now, so you wont have to pay $200 for it down the road. Free os, what do you have to loose? I would upgrade while it's still free imo.
