Windows Mixed Reality, some questions.

Does it work with Elite Dangerous?

and if so

Is is immersive?
Does it work pretty well?
Is there anything I should know for like setup or anything you can think of?

I just ordered the HP Mixed Reality headset, and that one has a 100 degree FOV, will this FOV pose any kind of problem for this game?
Is it still immersive at 100 degree FOV?

Thank you.

I cheekily bought the HP version on Amazon and returned after a week to have a play with, I'm going to get a VIVE Pro soon after selling my standard VIVE and keeping the sensors and controllers.

I played Elite Dangerous, Fallout 4 VR, Sairento VR and Skyrim VR they all worked perfectly, in fact it was so much easier to configure and setup over my VIVE. Windows 10 and Steam detects it all instantly and the in application config is easy and simple.

Image wise it was a bit nicer than the VIVE I'd say about 10% better if that but only noticeable really with objects or shadows at long range. The VIVE is a better piece of kit nicer quality and more options available but for the price the Windows Mixed reality stuff is a solid 7 out of 10.

The tracking being done by the headset rather than controllers really isn't an issue very very occasionally you get an issue in games like Fallout when your moving around a lot, no issues at all in Elite Dangerous.

Comfort wise the headset is no where near the VIVE... can't speak for the other WMR headsets but the HP one doesn't adjust that well and you need a break every couple of hours as it rubs the front of your head, it's not horrible to wear but the VIVE is much better. Maybe home made pads or something would ease this.

All my games and apps on Steam worked fine.

Price - 8 out of 10
Comfort - 6 out of 10
Setup/ease of use 9 out of 10
Build quality - 6 out of 10 (controllers feel a bit more plastic/clicky than vive)

Elite Dangerous is amazing in VR just make sure you have a strong CPU & GPU. FOV is fine I didn't notice any difference over my VIVE.

A nice touch is being able to open the headset at the front so you don't have to keep taking it off.

Hi

In answer to your question, yes it does work with Elite Dangerous, although I have mine working by using the WMR for Steam App. This then allows you run E:D in the SteamVR mode.

I have the Lenovo WMR headset, which is 105 FOV degree. I haven't experienced too many problems with it, most of the time you will be looking around using your head instead of your eyes like you would do with a monitor. I find it works very well, and the immersion is fantastic - as many have said, the sense of scale you get is awesome, and somethings are both amazing and terrifying at the same time - such as dogfighting in an asteroid field! Be warned though - some movements will trigger travel sickness, I personally found this mostly to be where you are flying with a fixed reference point, such as the surface of a planet or inside of a starport.

The one recommendation I'd probably make is that think very carefully about your control set up. You will not be able to see your keyboard / mouse without removing your headset, so things like navigation in the GalMap become challenging.

Hope this helps!

SteamVR detected the WMR headset I used and it worked just like my VIVE.

I don't know but as the guy above said he got it working through the Microsoft app so you may not need SteamVR/Elite on Steam however cannot confirm!

It sounds like comfort probably won't be an issue for me. I am someone that tends to take breaks after 1 hour of play. In research others have stated that have 2+ hours of playing that things can start getting uncomfortable, so I didn't take it as an issue for me at all because I take breaks every hours anyways when I am gaming.

I would love to have a Vive though, but it costs way to much.

In fact I bought the HP Mixed Reality, but a certified refurbished one for $159, and with my Discover Card cash back match it paid $156 of it, so I am going real cheap, which was the biggest reason why I decided to dive into VR, the price out of my pocket was right, haha. If I end up loving it and doesn't cause any issues for me, then I'll probably start saving up for a Vive or a Rift.

You got a bargain there! even if you only use it for ED at that price its going to be worth it, provided you have a meaty enough PC for VR. The WMR headsets are great for the money and they work just as well as the VIVE. You are literally paying for slightly better tracking and a bit better build quality with the HTC and Oculus stuff at the moment. Comfort was a draw back but not a major one and the Dell and Lenovo versions might be better than the HP set.

The VIVE pro is a massive jump up from the standard one but a lot of money that I'd only recommend to people willing to put hundreds of hours into VR. If you do consider saving for improved VR go for this or a same level headset. You won't notice enough between the WMR and standard VIVE to warrant price.

VIVE PRO all the way if you can afford and run it.

Have fun commander!
