Wing colllection of Data and Materials

Hi

So i really like playing in a wing with a friend of mine. We want to go up against some Thargoids but we need a lot of engineering Materials and Data. Also those Guardian Weapons and Modules.
But basically collecting Materials and Data and Guardian stuff is not doable in a wing because only one commander can get the Data/Material.

Gathering Materials is a big part of the Elite: Dangerous gameplay, but it is the only one that is not doable (in a useful way) in a wing.

My suggestion is: While in a wing and in the same instance the whole wing shares Data and Materials (When one player picks it up all wing members get it). That way almost every aspect of the gameplay is accessible as a wing.

Because it would make it useful to work as a team and thus making the multiplayer experience more interesting.
FDevs did that with bounty hunting and exploration, all data and rewards are shared there even though efforts per CMDR are reduced. That way it is better (more profitable) to do these things in a wing, than doing them Solo.
That way we are encouraged to work in Teams rather than doing it all alone.
I think that is a good idea for a multiplayer game, and i would like to see this in the aspect of Material/Data gathering as well, because, as i said, it is a big asspect of the gameplay.

It is more profitable to work in a wing. In a wing you can have ships shooting sentinels and charging the pylons. It's much easier and faster. Also, I think you can just recharge the pylons and have someone else drop the key and another wing member can scan the beacon anyway without redoing the site.

When one collects a material while in a wing, everyone in a wing should receive it. It would strongly encourage people to play together. I would even team up with people I might not know for driving on planets and looking for stuff. Or at least some kind or rationing: I picked it up, I receive 3x - everyone else in a wing will receive 1x.

As long as not only one doing the work and the others waiting for their share to reach the expected amount.
Data materials could arguably be mulitplied without issues, while physical materials are not transferred in any way while in a wing and material sharing or exchange between Cmdrs is not intended or possible.

I think it fine the way it is. If you had a wing of 3. You could take turns on collector limpets time limit. Than switch when that limpet expired. Than two pilots could take down a target while the third collect mats. This could also help if you need to rearm ammo and such.

I think if players are somewhat skilled Collecting mats should not be an issue.

I am looking at it as 3 players that are working as a team.

I think in general, you should be rewarded more for playing as a team than doing it solo. To encourage people to interact. That's my only point.
By now I have tons of money and I'm rarely short of materials, but still, I rather do solo cargo missions, because the rewards are bigger/more satisfying and easier to do than anything I saw in a wing.
Don't tell me you wouldn't team up for SRV material hunt, if you knew you are likely to get more stuff and quicker while enjoying someone's company. For me, the wing is only good for messing around, but that's it.
It's an online game, it should be more encouraging to experience it with other people.

More magical multiplication of stuff? No thanks, playing with friends is its own reward and doesn't need to be further encouraged through in-game mechanics. Playing with friends already lets you destroy ships and mine minerals twice as fast.

However, the option for material sharing could work, where picking up a material that you are full on automatically transfers it to the nearest wingman within a certain range. Alternatively, rather than collecting 3x of a material every time, it could be adjusted in wings to give you 2x and the nearest wingman 1x material for every pickup.

Great point.

Back when the new Guardian sites came out (after switching to the PC because more than 2 SRVs crashes consoles) we found pretty quickly that mining a Gaurdian site in SRVs in a Wing of Four was disappointing.

While it was easier to activate the machine with four people, but there just wasn't enough materials to go around.

My suggestion is: While in a wing and in the same instance the whole wing shares Data and Materials (When one player picks it up all wing members get it). That way almost every aspect of the gameplay is accessible as a wing.

I agree that Wings of Four should get four times the materials to share, but also that the challenge to get said materials should be four times as hard than getting them solo ;-)

+Rep Well put

Yes, very true, but there aren't enough materials to go around imo.

In our case, when we figured this out we actually broke up the wing and each went into solo.

The experience actually encouraged us to not play together, which was a downer but we moved on to other things.

Most mp games scale "encounter" difficulty and rewards based on the number of people in the group, but sadly this does not seem to be how the newish guardian sites work.

While they can be farmed as a group, they really don't seem to scale up to match the number of people there.

I'd also add that playing a bad co-op game or game level with friends is not rewarding imo, which is why my friends and I left the ruins for more enjoyable co-op experiences in Elite.

But hey, if others are enjoying farming these sites in wings then have at it! It's a big Galaxy with room for everyone ;-)

Yeah, I'm up for scaling up the difficulty when in a wing as long as it's more profitable than doing it solo. I think that makes perfect sense and it is common in other games.
